| paultu1985's Full Review: Apple Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger Full Version (M9639Z/A) |
Switching from Windows to Mac is a tough choice, but being a technician for Windows based systems... that's really tough. For all my computing life, I've been an exclusive Windows user, finding it to be the best at accomplishing everyday tasks without problem. Well, I say that "without a problem" meaning that the intended task is easy- ie, without a problem. Well, like most Windows applications and add-ons, problems are a way of life. Software crashes and bugs; interrupted by viruses and unknown spyware hiding amongst the files.
Well, I still work on a daily basis on Windows machines, but when I saw a preview for 10.4, I knew I needed to look into this. I did. I went to my local Apple store and took a test drive. I found it to be the most intuitive and exciting computing experience I've had since the time I got my reformatted Window's 95 machine to boot up.
The biggest improvement over Windows would have to be the expose' and dashboard. With these two handy tools, you can instantly show all open programs, hide all the windows, expose all sub-windows, and switch between open applications. Dashboard is simply a widget host that allows me access to all my news, weather, sports, web clips, and any other data I wish with a press of a button.
So is Tiger perfect? Well, no... but it's close. I've had no trouble switching from Windows to Mac. Well, I've had trouble- but not because of Mac. :) So if you want to switch- do it! Be patient and work with you software, not against it. I think that is the biggest help with the new OS X 10.4; it works with you and for you. I was alway trying to get Windows to do what I wanted it to, while Mac just does it; working in a seem-free fashion with ALL the other programs on your machine.
What about iLife, iTunes, iPhoto, and garageband you say? Well, to put it in simple terms, they do everything that the average consumer needs. The latest iTunes is revolutionary to say the least; breaking down the barrier between music and listener, the whole experience becomes a visual and audio extravaganza. Album art streams across the screen to aid in album searches, and search methods are alarmingly fast due to spotlight's (Mac's search tool) integration into iTunes. iLife is just the same- integration at it's finest. iPhoto is beautiful; instantly syncing camera and media to the library, and quickly search-able. Garageband isn't the most powerful tool available, but it will surpass about every audio enthusiasts expectations; putting the smack-down on most over-the counter competition. Did I mention that iMovie and iPhoto work hand-in-hand? Well, they do... every picture in your photo library is a quick click away from being imported into that new video/slide-show. Did I forget anything? I don't know, but I do know I can sum it up in the word "integration." Don't ask why, just understand it works- always.
So do I like it? Well, I'm using a iBook G4 now with OS X 10.4... so yea, I like it. Yes, I love it.
