| mediahound's Full Review: Apple Power Mac G5 (Z0BLW13154462) Mac Desktop |
This is the best industrial design of any personal computer in the world, including all previous Macs. It is form meets function executed perfectly-a true work of art. Just looking at it evokes a sense of bauhaus design ethic unsurpassed by not even a handful of other consumer products in the world.
Not only does the G5 look beautifully utopian and industrial, but every design feature is also functional (ie. it's not just for looks). And open up the sturdy aluminium case and inside you will see absolutely no hanging wires. It is as sleek on the inside as on the outside. But if you need a wire (to add a 2nd hard drive for example), they are there, neatly tucked away for you to pull out and use.
Just looking at the box you can tell that a lot of love and thought went into designing the G5. Another example is the drilled holes on the front and rear of the box. Notice that the holes are included on the curved part of the metal as well? As someone who has worked in industrial design, I can tell you that this is no easy feat to achieve. They had to manufacture the case such that the holes would not warp and look oval upon bending the metal. Extra steps like this are what separate Apple from all the rest. Not to mention OSX, which is a better operating system than Windows on so many levels.
Since the Intel chip Macs will not reach the Powermac line until later on (they will begin with lower end Macs first), and it will be a while before everything is transitioned over, I think buying a G5 is quite smart.
I believe the dual 2.3Ghz is the best buy because it's not as expensive as the 2.7 and the 2.7 runs much hotter (even though it's liquid cooled, the fans still kick in more often). The 2.3 G5 is very quiet. Although it has 5 fans, they spin at a low speed and practically never have to ramp up to high speed.
The 2.3 is so speedy I can hardly believe it, especially for the price. You are practically getting a supercomputer for a couple of thousand dollars-amazing. Highly recommend!
