I have been running for 3 years now, and had various shoes. Unfortunately, each shoe provided a unique physical pain. I had a pair of sauconys that I trained on for the 2002 LA marathon. They were great shoes, but after two months into my training, I was developing an ITB injury. I did not realize the severity at the time and continued to train. When marathon day came, I reached the 9 mile taking a quick walking break. Unfortunately, as I began to run again, I pulled my ITB in a rush to meet up with my running group. I had to walk the rest of the marathon. I don't blame the sauconys too much. They may have been overdue for a change, however, as I said earlier, I only two months into my training. I would imagine it was too soon into my training for these shoes to be worn out.
A year later, I had a pair of nikes that caused shin splints and an inner knee pain on the left side of my leg. This slowed my training for the SD rockin roll marathon. With the introduction of speed training once a month, the pain became worse. I rested to a semi state of being able to participate in the marathon. However, after the marathon, the shin splints continued along with the inner knee pain. This was most evident whenever I attempted to increase my speed. Even though I had the same nikes that were new a pair, the pain persisted. I was convinced to move on to a different brand.
Before going out and buying a new pair of shoes, I ran into an article in Runner's world magazine. It talked about the paper bag test to determine the type footing you have. I did the test and discovered I needed a shoe that provided stability. I believe it said that runners with this type of footing slightly pronated.
Afterwards, I went to a popular shoe store in san diego. I spoke to an expert and they fitted me into the asics gel nimbus vi. It has been seven months, and I am already in my 2nd pair. It has been a very cushioned run leading into my 3rd LA marathon, and I had not experienced any problems since running in these asics. I highly recommend these shoes for runners that need that extra cushion and for those who slightly or over pronate.
Overall, speaking to other runners and through my own experiences, you have to go through a number of shoes before you find the right one for you. Throughout this training year for the LA marathon, it has been a great experience going pain free in my asics gel nimbus vi. I hope to have a good run for its 20th anniversary
