| opteron64's Full Review: ASUS NVIDIA nForce Chipset A7N266-VM (A7N266-VM W/... |
The A7N-266VM is an excellent entry level AMD board with its host of integrated features. I think it is fine for beginners - I built my first system with this board. It works smoothly and I have not had any major dramas with it.
The limitations only become apparent when you start looking at moving on to a more powerful system. The board only supports up to 1 GB of PC2100 RAM and AMD FSBs of 200MHz. This excludes the possibility of upgrading to the latest AMD Athlons. Also the BIOS does not support overclocking. The onboard IGP is sufficient for low resolution gaming, hence an GeForce 2 Ti or greater is recommended for better gaming performance.
nVidia provide an excellent nForce driver package on their site. Given recent developments, I would suggest going for the newer nForce 2 Ultra 400 boards - they overcome all the shortcomings of this board. But then again, this applies only to those who want a more powerful system
