| axecat's Full Review: ATI All-in-Wonder® 128, (32 MB) PCI Video Car... |
Known for problems on AMD/Cyrix systems, the ATI All In Wonder 128 AGP NTSC NA (16 MB) works beautifully on systems built around Intel Pentium III and Intel Celeron (I own two of them). Not only the 2D acceleration of programs like Microsoft Windows are fast and crystal clear but the 3D acceleration is acceptable.
If you want to buy this card, you should only consider that they are happier on Intel LX, BX and ZX based motherboards, they run trouble free under Windows98 (first edition).
3D performance is good in games like Driver, Flight Simulator 98, etc.
2D gaming compatibility has problems with very old games, never managed to run Grim Fandango demo with it or Microprose´s excellent Transport Tycoon.
DVD playing is crystal clear (AGP version needed for performance)
Video capture is great but the ATI VCR 2.0 CODEC is not compatible with most video editing programs like Adobe Premiere. But you can capture in MPEG-1, MPEG-2, ATI VCR-1, ATI VCR 2.0 (best quality IMHO).
TV player is excellent on the 16 MB version cyrstal clear and does not use any CPU resources, the 32 MB version has been reported with problems.
Software, on the other hand needs some work. ATI video drivers have been optimized by a guy named Lightspeed (www.rageunderground) who has developed drivers for both Intel and AMD platforms. Also on Multimedia Center 6.2, the ATI video CODEC VCR-2 needs some work to make it compatible with video editing programs.
I am keeping my AIW128 but going to buy a Firewire-based solution for Video Capture/Editing and still use my AIW128 for animation, editing, etc.
