upstream's Full Review: 1718 Digital Answering Machine
I have read some reviews criticizing the sound quality but I experienced good sound quality both in greeting message and recorded message.
The reason I bought it was I need a answering machine. I had cordless phone already and I didn't want to make my kitchen counter crowded with big answering phone combo. This machine was one of the smallest and cleanest looking answering machine.
The most important aspect, sound quality is very good. I did not have a hard time hearing most tricky voices. I also have called my home and left voice message to my wife. The greeting was clear (I use Sprint cellular phone.) and the message I left was clear when I come back home and check it. I am very satisfied with the sound quality.
The control was easy. Just press big playback button and that's it. My model is old and does not show the number of message recorded numerically(new versions have 7-segment numeric display) the red lights blinks the number of message received. That's easy enough to see if you don't plan to have 5+ messages a day.
Only one drawback...durability. Mine died after 2 years of service. The power adapter was working but the circuit board died (It started to hang on as soon as plugged in. Some control logic messed up.) I threw it away and looking for replacement, this time a cordless phone and answering machine combo.
I think I was out of luck. The electronics usually does not break if it does not break at very early ages. When I disassembled the machine (trying to fix by myself) the circuit was very well laid out and well assembled.
Anyway I am hunting for cordless phone combo. But this answering machine is very good at its basics: sound quality and easy, intuitive controls.
