nkhammond's Full Review: 1718 Digital Answering Machine
We bought this machine to replace an old one about a year ago and due to necessity, we bought what was available in Circuit City's limited selection. We have not struggled with sound quality as much as trying to adjust to the quirks of the machine. The machine is designed to only allow you to delete if you have already heard the message in its entirety. That has both a good and bad side to it. If a person or company calls that you could care less to hear (such as telemarketers) you have to let the machine play regardless before it's deletable. Because you can only delete once heard you will often have to go back through the list of calls and delete each individually. It doesn't tell you how many calls are stored so you could be listening to a week or more calls if no one stays on top of deleting them which is typical in our house of 6. This means if you're taking down a number from a call and miss a number you will possibly have to listen to and delete a number of calls before you can get back to dictating your current call. That's a big pain. (It does tell you how many new calls are on it if you count the number of times the red light blinks.) Recently it decided to continue answering calls but leaves the caller confused because it never beeps to allow the caller to share their message...it just stopped recording. Now we have friends expecting a return call and we have no idea they called! Not good.
