nicolega2001's Full Review: AVEDA Rosemary Mint Shampoo
My Aveda Rosemary Mint Experience
Last summer I went to an Aveda Salon in Asheville, North Carolina. For a total of seven dollars, I came away with only 3.4 ounces of product. Why did I pay so much money? When the hairdresser began washing my hair, I was enamored with the wonderful smell of the Aveda Rosemary Mint Shampoo she used. It is a herbal, spearminty smell, and I truly felt luxurious. After she cut and styled my hair, it looked fantastic- soft, shiny, and frizz free. Since I was already paying so much money, I decided it couldnt hurt to fork over some more for two small bottles (one shampoo and one conditioner, each containing 1.7 oz).
What is Aveda?
Aveda's company vision: "Connecting beauty, environment, and well-being" - Aveda.com
Basically, they are a salon company that includes natural ingredients in their products (which includes hair care, skin care, makeup, Pure-Fume, and other general body pampering products). There are special Aveda salons that cut and color hair and give makeovers, but typically you will find their products located in a non-Aveda salon. Whether the natural ingredients make the products more effective I do not know, but I have found that their products generally work well and smell wonderful.
The product
The container I bought is 3.5 inches tall (yes, I measured it for the review, lol), almost clear with hunter green writing and has a tan flip top cap. I think the colors of the container may help to add to that natural look the Aveda company is going for. The shampoo is mostly a clear color. Aveda claims that this shampoo is good to use daily because it does not cause build up. I prefer to use it less often, as I would with a clarifying shampoo. I paid $3.50 for 1.7 ounces, and Avedas website says that 8.5 oz is $8.50 and 33.8 oz costs $24.00. If you regularly use the product, it would be cost effective to buy a bigger size.
This section can help you to determine how you think your hair may react to this shampoo compared to mine. I have color treated, shoulder length hair. It is fine in texture yet thick in the back. I use salon shampoos like Biolage and Bedhead because continued use of drugstore shampoos really make a limp, frizzy mess of my hair. If cheaper products work fine with your hair, then you may not benefit much from using this shampoo.
Shower Experience
I wet my hair and lather a quarter sized amount of product in my hands. When I apply the shampoo to my head, I immediately notice the amazing smell. It is very unique compared to other minty shampoos- I think it is much better because it doesnt smell medicinal in any way. One problem I do have with this shampoo is that the lather is mediocre. I have read about how lather does not equal clean, but psychologically I feel better with more lather.
After using the shampoo, I am impressed that even my ends feel moisturized. It is easy for me to run my fingers through my hair. I never feel the need to use a leave in conditioner/detangling product, although I do use the matching conditioner while in the shower. I figure its better to be safe than sorry, since my color treated hair has a tendency to be dry.
Styling
When I blow my hair dry after using Aveda Rosemary Mint Shampoo, my hair seems to be about the same as it is whenever I use any other higher end brand. Although this is not a review for the conditioner, I will just say that I think the conditioner was average.
I obviously like this shampoo a lot, and I feel it does a nice job. However, it is VERY expensive and I cannot imagine using this as my regular shampoo. I have also found that this product does not work well as a daily shampoo. Last summer I used every day for an entire week, and it seemed to dry out my hair a bit when used this way. Now, I prefer to use this shampoo about once a week. I have found products that work just as well for a lower price (even other Salon brands are cheaper), so this is not a must have shampoo for me. I do continue to buy it and I switch it with other shampoos regularly, so I do recommend it- to those willing to pay the high price. Thanks for reading my long-winded and first epinions shampoo review.
