Not pleased with many shampoos, and concerned about how much my scalp was drying from daily washing and hair styling products, my search led me to take a look at specialty stores and lines of hair care products - one of the ones I tried was a company called Aveda.
Known for its natural plant products, I decided maybe too many artificial elements were coming into my hair, and possibly a more natural approach would be best. Aveda typically has outlet stores in bigger malls. More expensive than many Walmart or like options (Suave, Aussie, etc), Aveda is comparable to hair products I have tried from counters like Clinique. We have 2 Aveda stores in our area that sell only Aveda products (oils, hair care, perfume, face care, make up, and etc).
The saleswomen at Aveda have always approached me and asked politely if I need any assistance. They seem informed about the product line, have been able to answer any questions I have had, and also have made good suggestions.
One of the first products I have tried, and continue to use is Aveda Rosemary Mint Shampoo. Mint is known to help the scalp, and for myself has been a wonderful product to use. Not only tingly and comforting, the Mint Shampoo has removed much of the dry patches and itchiness I would typically get. The salestaff have told me this is a typical result for many users, and this shampoo is the most popular they have. It seems to work on a large number of hair types, and performs in areas above what it is marketed for, which is fine hair.
From the site, Aveda Rosemary Mint Shampoo is "a daily shampoo perfect for normal to fine hair. Adds body to fine hair--without stripping or build up. Formulated with organic peppermint to awaken the senses and organic rosemary to protect from environmental damage. Use with Rosemary Mint conditioner for optimum benefits."
This product is clear, and has such a wonderfully minty smell that lasts even after the shower is over. My husband always knows when I use Aveda Rosemary Mint Shampoo because he says the whole upstairs smells minty. It does not lather up as much as many other shampoos, but tingles on the scalp, and rinses away easily. It's a shampoo that he feels comfortable using too.
The only real drawback to this product that I have found is that it is a little drying to my hair, and because it is so light, it does not detangle well, making it impossible for me to use with its companion conditioner. Aveda Rosemary Mint Shampoo is made as a light shampoo, for fine hair and super cleansing. My hair is not fine, but not too thick, and so the saleswoman warned me that it would be a very light product on my hair. Therefore, I used it with another Aveda conditioner, Shampure. Since then I've used Aveda Rosemary Mint Shampoo with a large variety of moisturizing or "treatment" conditioners - and it works well every time.
I have noticed a big difference in how my scalp feels. I went on vacation for 10 days and did not bring my Aveda with me - I thought I would die. My head itched some, and I had some build-up from the styling products I had used. I always have Aveda Rosemary Mint Shampoo in my shower (or with me on long trips), and after trying many "clarifying shampoos" I have come back to realizing using this product once a week is all that I need.
The site states that Aveda's mission is to "care for the world we live in, from the products we make to the ways in which we give back to society. At Aveda, we strive to set an example for environmental leadership and responsibility, not just in the world of beauty, but around the world." I find this an added benefit to buying this product, as I feel like I am "giving back" to my hair. It costs $7.50 for a 7.5 oz bottle, and they do make bigger sizes. For $1.00 more you can purchase an Aveda pump to place over the top of the bottle, instead of the press down top that comes with this product.
I highly recommend this specific shampoo and suggest that you enter an Aveda store in your area and see what this company has to offer.
