jiastar's Full Review: Russell Hoban - El Gran Negocio De Francisca/Barga...
I recently purchased this title for my daughter who is approaching her sixth birthday. I decided on this book because I remember the "Frances" stories from my youth as simple and sweet. Also, with its watercolor illustrations and easy to read text I felt that it would be a great encouragement for her to read more.
Frances is a sweet and innocent "girl". She has a friend Thelma, who unfortunately takes advantage of her gentle nature.
Frances, you see, is saving up for a china tea set. Her friend Thelma has a plastic set, which is fun, but Frances wants something special.
Somehow Thelma convinces Frances to buy HER set instead of a china one, and then uses the money to buy a china set for herself.
Will Frances realize she's been tricked?
Will she "get back" at Thelma?
Will she ever get the tea set of her dreams?
Will she and Thelma remain friends?
Well, to find out you'll have to read this classic treasure.

Why I consider this book a treasure:
-- the charming illustrations; soft hued with wonderful details
-- it teaches how true friends should treat one another
-- it teaches about forgiveness
-- it teaches how deceit never pays off
-- it is wonderful to read aloud
-- while an easy read it still challenges young readers
This is a gentle tale which has stood the test of time for 30 years. Whether or not you remember it from your own youth, it will make a wonderful gift for your child (or other children in your life).
