A-Data Technology ADATA Turbo 150x 4GB SD Card
Having got a Dell Axim recently, I was in the market for a high speed 2GB SD card. I found the Adatas 4GB card at 150X speed, priced around the 2 GB cards price range and it was 150X rated, so I got it. Here is the review in detail
Contents:
The box is lightly packed, unlike the Sandisks and the kingstons which usually have a tough plastic encasing the SD card box. The SD card was pink, consistent with the picture on the retailers website. A folded pink paper with specifications and manufacturer info is about everything there is in it. The pink paper gives very little info about the card itself. There is a URL: www.adata.com/tw and it does not work, page unavailable.
Foreword:
4 GB is definitely a high capacity in a small SD card size. I was never able to fill up the Sandisk Ultra II Plus 1GB card ( http://www.epinions.com/content_231663963780 ) I use in my 8 megapixel canon S80 camera ( http://www.epinions.com/content_232843480708 ). Even for a PDA with tons of programs installed, a 4 GB card is an over-kill, but hey, when you can get a 4GB card for the price of a 2GB card, why not ?
Using the SD card:
I inserted the SD card into the PDA and it was detected immediately, great, not a DOA. I checked the capacity in the PDA & it shows 3813.53MB. I was missing 187 MB of space, but with 3.8GB remaining, I didnt care much for it. I was able to install some new programs straight to the SD card, download MP3s from the internet and also from my computer. The transfer speeds seemed to be better than the 66X Sandisk Ultra II plus card, but I wanted to put it to the test, thats later. The card just works & thats what it is meant to do. The Sandisk Ultra II plus has a built in USB connector, so it doubles as a flash drive too. The Adata has no such bells & whistles, but it does exactly what the manufacture claims it to do
being an SD card.
Some Tests:
These tests are not professional tests using standard Test Matrix Tester. Instead of that equipment I used a stopwatch and laptop equipped with a SD card slot. The test involved transferring a single file of 81.5MB size and a folder of 106MB containing 122 JPEGs, each approximately 1 MB size. I clocked time taken to move the file/folder to the card, from the card and the to delete the file/folder on the card. I compared the following products:
Sandisk Ultra II 1GB SD card:
Capacity - 1GB,
Speed - 9MBps(write) & 10MBps read
Rated 66X
Adata 4 GB card:
Capacity 4 GB
Speed - 15 MBps (write) & 22.5 MBps (read)
Rated 150X
Test 1:
Two transfers of a single 81.5 MB file
Sandisk To SD card 00:28:89 / 00:28:64
From SD card 00:12:32 / 00:12:39
Delete 00:01:02 / 00:01:08
Adata - To SD card 00:27:33 / 00:26:11
From SD card 00:11:89 / 00:11:46
Delete 00:00:51 / 00:00:49
Test 2:
Two transfers of a folder of 106MB with 122 JPEGs
Sandisk To SD card 1:35:26 / 1:33:70
From SD card 00:19:70 / 00:17:96
Delete 00:46:33 / 00:45:78
Adata - To SD card 1:16:71 / 1:12:95
From SD card 00:18:09 / 00:16:95
Delete 00:12:45 / 00:12:26
The transfer rates seem to be around the same for a single file but for multiple files, there is a substantial difference. The Adata at 150X is faster that the Sandisk 66X card. Though the Adata claims it is twice as fast as as a 66X, it does not quite translate to that in practice. But, during professional testing the most optimum conditions are maintained and will definitely produce faster transfer rates. But for a consumer with not so perfect environment, you can expect these transfer rates mentioned above. The Adata is faster than the 66X rated card. I paid $81 (7 months back) for the Sandisk and $79 (after MIR) for the Adata.
Specifications from manufacturer:
Card Type: Secure Digital
Capacity: 4 GB
Transfer speed: Write 15 MBps, Read 22.5MBps
Dimensions: 24mm x 32mm x 2.1mm
Operation voltage: 2.7 ~ 3.6 Volts
Conclusion:
The Adata 4GB SD card does exactly what it is meant to do, be an SD card. Having 4GB capacity and extremely inexpensive it makes a very good buy even though the packing seems cheap. It delivers where it counts. Definitely recommended
