cledge's Full Review: George R.R. Martin - A Game of Thrones
"A Game of Thrones", book one of George R.R. Martin's fantasy saga 'A Song of Ice and Fire' is a brilliant masterpiece. Martin has created an epic fantasy world with a realistic feel. His characters and writing style draw the reader into the story to where you feel as though you are seeing events happen not just reading them.
Martin brings out the emotions of the reader, with characters you love and hate and with the depth he tells the story. With his character Eddard Stark (Ned), Lord of Winterfell, Martin created a strong man of honor who has a love for a simple life. Ned leaves the harsh cold lands of the north and heads south to King's Landing where he is to serve as the King's Hand to his longtime friend, King Robert, who he helped take the throne. Ned never realizes he will not see Winterfell or his wife Lady Catelyn again.
Martin's characters Varys and Littlefinger, two members of the king's council, constantly keep you wondering what each is up to. Varys the eunuch, also called the spider, seems to know everything that happens and whispers in people's ears just what they want to hear and only what he wants them to hear. Littlefinger, Lord Petyr Baelish, master of coin, will do anything if the price is right, and loves to play one person against another, with both believing he is on their side.
Queen Cersei, King Robert's bride, is as evil as she is power hungry. Tired of her drunken husband, she plots to place her son, prince Joffrey, on the throne and herself in control. All of Martin's characters come alive on the pages, each with his or her own personalities which leaves the reader rooting for them or wanting to throttle them, and sometimes a little of both. "A Game of Thrones" is an intense story full of lords and ladies, tragedy and intrigue. A must read for any sci-fi fan.
