Anybody who bashes Tom Wolfe for writing bestsellers should be forced to read Kurt Andersen's "Turn of the Century" for perspective!
Not that Andersen's book is unpleasant, but it's rough going exactly because he doesn't use the tricks Wolfe does, to keep the casual reader engaged.
Both are critiquing modern society by depicting people at high levels of wealth and power, which to me seems a highly admirable challenge.
Wolfe engages his characters in high drama, and keeps the esoteric detail at arm's length, so "Man in Full" (and "Bonfire of the Vanities" as well) is a real page-turner.
But Wolfe manages to confront just as many social ills along the way (with a directness that appalls the PC crowd) so by the end you feel you've benefited from the experience, as well as passing some pleasant hours.
