This is the story of Lisa and her mother and her stuffed bear Corduroy.
One afternoon they went to the laundromat. It was very busy at this time. Lisa sat Corduroy on a chair and told him to wait there she was going to help with the wash. Lisa's mother reminded her to take everything out of the pockets and Corduroy thought to himself, "I don't have any pockets." So he decided to go and look for something to make a pocket out of.
First he came to a pile of towels and washcloths, but nothing was the right size or color. Next he came to a laundry bag full of damp clothing. He thought this was a cave so he climbed in.
In the meantime, Lisa and her mother were finished and the laundromat was getting ready to close. When Lisa went to get her bear he wasn't there. Lisa didn't want to leave without Corduroy but her mom said they had to go. "You can come back tomorrow, I'm sure he will be here."
As they left a man grabbed his bag of laundry and soon Corduroy was being tossed into the dryer. But just as he shut the door Corduroy fell out. The man wondered where he came from and noticed his clothes were damp. So he took them off and put them in the dryer. When the clothes were dry he put them back on Corduroy and left him sitting on a washing machine.
As soon as the laundromat closed and the lights were out Corduroy began his search again for a pocket. He saw something white and glowing in the dark. He thought it was snow and went to play in it. The box of soap fell over and Corduroy fell into a laundry basket. Now he thought he was in a cage. Soon he went to sleep.
The next morning, as soon as the laundromat opened, Lisa was there. She searched everywhere. Finally she found him and ran home with him. "Why did you wander away?" Lisa asked Corduroy. "I went looking for a pocket" he said. "Well why didn't you tell me you wanted a pocket" Lisa said. So Lisa sewed him a pocket and made a card with his name to keep inside.
