| lil_me11's Full Review: A Trendy Home Electrostatic Pet Scat Mat |
My cat Marley pees on soft surfaces left out of place. Drop a coat? Pee. Rumple a blanket? Pee. Dog's bed? Pee. He loves it and it drives me nuts because I a) can't keep the bedroom door open or he pees on my bed and the dog's, and b) can only pray my guests don't leave a cloth item on the floor when they come over.
He's not a sick cat. He's quite healthy and uses his box otherwise, but someone told me that if kittens use their bedding to pee on before 4 weeks old, they start to prefer that feeling. And Marley does it so quickly I can't even catch him. From internet searches, I found it's quite common, and I got Marley at a shelter where his previous family dropped him off for "undisclosed reasons." Hm.
The Scat Mats are my solution! They deliver a mild shock when stepped on... yes, by humans too, but it's like static. When it has been activated, a "tattletale light" blinks, so you know how many time your cat has tried to go to that location while you were away.
I bought two (they're $75 a piece but so worth it). One I put one in the dog bedding, keeping the dog away from it with a baby gate so he couldn't get zapped. The other I put under the bedspread. Cat has jumped on the bed and run off and hasn't returned. The trick is to hide them under things so the cat associates the zap with the objects and not the mat.
Another trick is to drop tempting blankets on the floor with the Scat Mat under it, or put the mat under laundry in the basket, wherever the cat my be tempted to pee.
Soon the cat associates the blankets, coats, laundry, etc. with "ouch" instead of peeing pleasure. It works really fast.
Yes, I'd rather avoid staticking my cats, but it's either that or get rid of the pee-er. I really can't have pee all over the place, and shutting every door and putting everything up all the time is not feasible.
Hope this helps someone as much as it helped me. I'm just thrilled not to have pee problems anymore! Wooohooooo!
BTW, in reference to my title, I talked to cat behaviorists and cat rescues and they told me that with this sort of behavior, most rescues and shelters will put a cat down, so if I were to bring him back to the shelter since my stuff was getting soaked in pee, he would inevitably be euthanized. So, effectively, Scat Mat saved the cat's life. :0)
