| Magick1's Full Review: A&W Root Beer 72oz |
I was fortunate enough to try an A & W Root Beer way back when I was a little girl. My parents make a joke about it, as I was roughly 2 years old and had a frosty mug of root beer that was junior sized and I loved it!
Well, the feelings remain partial to the old fashioned root beer that I have always known and enjoyed. I find many different versions out on the market and I have tried some others. But, I always come back to this product!
The Product
This root beer has a wonderful color: dark amber in color but its clear when you pour it into a glass. Personally, I have purchased some of those mugs that you can freeze and pull them out when I enjoy one of these root beers! I love the somewhat frozen slush that it creates from the frosty mug and it takes me back to the good old days where you could pull up to the drive in A & W restaurant, order a mug of root beer and they would skate it out to the car in a frosty glass mug. You cannot really find these places that do that anymore! What a bummer.
Have you ever tried one of those hard A & W Root Beer candies? Do you recall the smell and the flavor? This drink, when you crack open a can pushes out the root beer scent immediately and it smells wonderful and it reminds me exactly of the candy! They did a terrific job emulating the drink flavor in those candies!
This drink is full of sugary sweetness and just enough bite to make you appreciate it. I feel the drink seems to give a brief pinch of root beer flavor and sweeps your mouth with the sweet flavor that you expect from a soda. The root beef made my A & W is soda doesnt have caffeine if that is a concern for you! It also doesnt have a tremendous amount of fizz when you pour it out. There is some, but its not like most sodas where you pour it into a glass and if you dont watch out you might fizz over the top of the glass!
Per the A & W Drive In website www.aw-drivein.com the history of this root beer dates back to 1919. The formula was purchase from a pharmacist in Arizona by Roy Allen. Allen started to mix up this drink and sold mugs of it for a nickel! He started to open up other stands to sell this because it was successful and then decided to take on a partner. He got Frank Wright and this is where the A & W came from. Its really kind of interesting history and you should check it out!
Per this website, the drink is made up of a blend of herbs, spices, barks and berries! If you havent had this before or never really looked into root beers, you probably did not think all of this went into it, right?

Overall Impressions
I really enjoy this root beer and to me, it will always be the first choice of root beers if I have a selection. Others I have tried either have too much bite and not enough sweetness or they just taste flat! This selection always satisfies that craving. I enjoy every single delicious, sweet, tasty drop. One can normally satisfies my craving and I normally can get by on 1 can a week! Summer time, when the frosty mugs and the root beer tastes the best to me, I might have 2 3 week cans a week!
If you have not tried this and enjoy drinking soda and you dont mind a bit of sweetness tinged with just a slight bite of something else (spices), you might enjoy this. If you like the sharper tasting root beers, this likely will be too sweet for your palate. But, you never know. Give it a shot. Do it justice though and try it in a frosty mug to get the best flavor! If nothing else, make sure it is very cold when you drink it! I hope you enjoy it, I know I sure do!
