rez's Full Review: A Winter Symphony [Digipak] by Sarah Brightman
I was looking forward to something special from Sarah on the CD. After listening to the entire CD, I was left feeling a bit disappointed. It is not that Brightman did not sing well, but it was that the musical arrangments were average and uninspired. With so many excellent composer/arrangers helping to make great albums for Josh Groban, Celtic Woman, etc., I would have expected something more interesting to listen to -- instead, much of the CD sounded like the same music I heard on other CDs, only with Sarah singing insetad of someone else. The arrangement do little to show off her emmense talent.
The other criticism is with the song selections. There is very little upbeat material, so contrasting moods are not delivered in any effective manner. Certainly there is sufficient upbeat, lighter material to choose from for the CD Winter theme - but for some reason, the CD prefers to stay overly mellow and reflective. The producers need to learn that contrasting material is often more important that singer-preferred material. Some great music has been performed by singer who did not care for the particular song, but they were forced to record it to balance out an albums. We have glimpses of that on other Brightman CDs where she goes out of her comfort zones and still delivers some excellent music!
