| miamoon's Full Review: Abed Latex Mattress |
Firstly, latex and memory foam mattresses in general are fantastic! They are definitely superior to the standard innerspring mattresses for comfort, spine alignment, circulation and pressure distribution.
I am a board certified Family Practice Physician who has back pain and I've tried a lot of mattresses.
I researched about 20 different companies that sell latex and memory foam mattresses. After comparing foam density, latex and memory foams, I test drove about 3 different ones (Tempurpedic, Abed and Foamorder.com) Basically all the companies offer similar latex: The firmer more expensive more resilient and durable Talalay latex and the regular kind. The memory foam toppers came in two basic flavors also - the softer 2inch Isopedic 4lb density foam or the higher quality, denser, 5 lb memory foam (comparable to Tempurpedic). Thicker is not better. Even a very heavy person only really needs a 6 to 8 inch mattress. Most people only feel the top four inches, really. Foundations provide some support, but are really more to add height. The fashion in thicker mattresses is just that...a fashion. They are not better, but are marketed by mattress companies as "more luxurious".
Tempurpedic is the most expensive. The bottom layer is not latex, but a conventional foam which I found too hard. It is then covered with three inches of 5 lb memory foam and a thin velour cover.
I thought that the latex mattress from Abed was of good quality. It was surprisingly firm ( I ordered medium firmness). So I added their memory foam topper. However, the price was over $1800 (for a king size foam/latex with memory foam and foundation) However, I found a much better price at Foamorder.com - $1300 (for the 6 inch Larkspur bed with a 3 inch memory foam topper and brand name tempurpedic foundation). The quality of the latex is about the same at both companies. But the memory foam is much closer to the Tempurpedic which is the 5lb density as opposed to 4 lb density at Abed.---you can also order the three inch thickness. They will also customize the size of each layer, the firmness of each layer, custom covers, the thickness of each layer and free shipping! Plus, the foundation I got from Foamorder.com was the brand-name Tempurpedic foundation! Customer service with both companies is good, but Foamorder sales people were more knowledgeable about the technical aspects of foam resiliency, etc. I love my bed! I got the latex mattress with a 3 inch memory foam topper finally and I sleep so well. My back aches are gone. A good product whichever company you order from. But I think Foamorder really does the best job, best value, best service and best custom options.
