| monkee_mann's Full Review: Abit KR7A-RAID Motherboard |
Well it was time for me to finally upgrade my computer, and after some extensive research I found that Abit seemed to rank Quite high. The first things to knowtice when buying a new motherboard is to check for expandability. I knowticed first off that, "hay that's 6 PCI slots" which is abnormal with the Abit competitors. The second thing I saw was that there were 4 DDR Slots (3 in abits competitors) that support up to 4GB of RAM. Sounds great so far, but in further reading I found that that is 4GB ECC(error correction controled)Registered Memory, And only 3GB non ECC memory. Then you got to ask yourself, hay Do I really need 4GB of expensive memory When 3GB of the cheaper stuff is more than enough. Also on the plus side for this board is the Highpoint raid controller supporting Raid 0,1 or 0+1. R.A.I.D stands for Redundant Array of Independent Disks, or in English more speed or more IDE Expansion. The Raid controllers support up to ata133 devices so you can pack this thing chalk full of the new technologies. For those of you that are counting yes this board does support up to 8 IDE Devices. That means you can run enough hard drives to keep the biggest geeks happy for quite some time. Okay now you know its expandable but on a side note you also have to check out the chipsets on these boards and this one is using a manufacture that I've been putting my trust into for years VIA. Now for the down sides of the board short and sweet No USB 2.0(it would have been nice), No AGP Pro( I don't think I'll use it but its nice to know its there) and last but not least If you are planning to run Windows XP use ECC memory you'll thank me later.
