I have read a couple of the other reviews on this product and we have some very different views on this particular beer especially regarding the presence of raspberries and the taste.
While having lunch today at The Jazz, a Louisiana kitchen in Kansas City, Missouri, I decided to try the Abita Purple Haze beer.
About The Brew
Abita Brewery is located near New Orleans and produces a variety of ales and lagers. They even have their own brand of Root Beer. Their beverages are brewed using water from Abita Springs, Louisiana, and quality barley. Abita brews are cold filtered with no additives or preservatives.
Purple Haze Wheat Brew has a fresh raspberry puree that is added after filtration. I was served Purple Haze in a bottle and clearly noted visable bits of raspberry pulp floating both in the beer and lining the bottom, where it had settled. So even through a dark brown bottle, I could see the raspberries even before pouring it into a glass.
I must admit that I am not a fan of strong, dark beers so I was delighted with my choice. Purple Haze is a light brew with a slight purple tint from the raspberries in the color. When I first smelled the brew, I thought it smelled more like a grape drink instead of raspberry. Once I tasted it, I definitely got a mouthful of sweet raspberry ale.
Best Served With . . .
My dinner at The Jazz consisted of spicy red beans and rice with Andouille sausage, chicken A La Mer (parmesan cream with shrimp and crabmeat), and sweet hush puppies.
Abita Purple Haze was a perfect selection to take some of the sting away from the intensely spicy foods. The light sweet flavor of the ale went well with the red beans and rice that was loaded with cajun spices and andouille sausage. Not only was it great with the spicier foods but it complimented the sweeter foods like the hush puppies and the Beignets (a cajun style doughnut) I had for desert.
Overall, I couldn't have made a better choice for a new brew to try with this type of food. The raspberry taste was not overpowering but strong enough to make this a delightfully crisp and flavorful ale. I thought the $2.50 a bottle charge was more than a fair price to pay for this brew.
Until next time . . . Laissez Les Bon Tempe Rouler
