| tsusurfer's Full Review: Abita Purple Haze |
Abita Purple Haze is one of those brews you don't see everyday. But that's what makes these finds such a treat. I went in to the local Mellow Mushroom because I was told that they had a fine selection of beers on tap. Sure enough, there were about 12 choices in front of me at the bar. I asked the bartender for a suggestion, and he quickly named Purple Haze. He then explained to me that Abita is a brewery from southeast Louisiana, and that Purple Haze was a consistent favorite for his customers. Rasberry puree is added to the brew at the end of the bottling process, so you can actually see bits of pulp in the beer. Intrigued, I had him pour me a tall, frosty pint.
Purple Haze pours to a light, golden body with a hint of a, you guessed it, purple haze. The head is moderate, if not a bit thin. The aroma is sweet and inviting, with a strong touch of rasberry. The taste is moderately complex. At first, it is rich, yet light. It is both sweet and refreshing. There is little taste of malt or hops. Then, as you swallow, there is a rasberry aftertaste. This is a bit tart, but not really bitter. It reminds me of the slight bite a good glass of lemonade should have.
Purple Haze is an enjoyable brew that is perfect for summer, but great for any season. It is refreshing, not filling. If you enjoy dark brews, you should probably skip this one. Everyone else should give Purple Haze a spin.
