| tkerodd's Full Review: Abita Purple Haze |
Abita is a name that is known to those of us who live near Louisiana. They make a great selection of beers, with a variety of tastes and flavors. Another thing that Abita does well is come up with catchy names for their products. Purple Haze is no different - it is definitely a beer name that you won't forget. Unfortunately, my experience is that you won't forget the beer either, but for a completely different reason.
The secret behind Abita Purple Haze is raspberry puree. During the brewing process, Abita adds raspberry puree to the beer. The intent was to take an amber wheat beer and give it is a hint of fruity raspberry to take the edge off, and give it a lighter taste. They have gone all out, even putting on a label with lots of swirls and bright purple colors, to give it that 60's look.
After drinking this beer, I am not impressed. In fact, I do not plan to buy it again. The label says that the beer has a slight purple color, which I did not see. When you taste it, you can definitely tell that the raspberry is there. It does make the beer much more sweet than it would otherwise be. The truth is that it may be a little too sweet. Also, Purple Beer comes with an aftertaste that really turned me off of the product. The beer tastes somewhat sweet, but the aftertaste is like a bitter raspberry. It is pronounced, and very hard to overlook.
Overall, I found the taste of this product to be pretty strange. The raspberry taste almost forces itself into the beer. A good comparison is the Samuel Adams Cherry Wheat, which is a wonderful beer. The Sam Adams Cherry flavor interacts very well with the beer, making for a very pleasant beer. With the Abita, the raspberry overwhelms the natural beer flavor. The result is a hodgepodge of tastes that don't go together well.
If you see Purple Haze on the shelf, go ahead and pick one bottle up to taste. You may like it. But I wouldn't throw down the money for a six pack until you taste it!
