Abomination has a lot of potential to be a good game. I loved (and still love) Xcom Apocalypse which is somewhat similar to Abomination. One of the things that I dont like about Abomination is the whole combat system. With so much realistic, modern day weaponary and statistics which differentiate between them, I was really looking forward to playing about with battles with the US army issue M4 versus the enemy with terrorist weapons like the AK 47 Assault rifle. What happens though is that range seems totally irrelevent. All rifle type weapons have a range of 12, all pistols have a range of 8 and the only effective weapon in the game (the sniper rifle with a range of 1.5km) has a range of 16. The statistical numbers given (8, 12 and 16) actually represent metres in the game area. This means that the aforementioned 1.5km rifle only fires for 16 metres!!! Absolutely ludicrous!! It is possible to throw grenades far further than you can shoot! It's also infuriatingly difficult to defend against groups of AK47 weilding maniacs (with poor AI I might add...)which appear in sixes typically with your M4 rifles. In reality you could gun down six unarmoured humans with an M4 in seconds but with the games weird and annoying game engine it takes about 20 seconds and about 10 x 30 shot clips to kill a group of slow moving targets about 5 metres away!!!
Another annoying thing about Abomination is that you have to ransack every bin, mail box, slain child and cardboard box to keep your arsenal topped up because almost all of the aforementioned objects contain rocket launchers, grenades, desert eagle pistols, rifles, shotguns or body armour!!! I'd like to know why the local residents stash 21st century hi-tech weaponary in every bin bag that they leave out for the trash. I'd like to know what the local senators think of that state of affairs!!!
Overall then - Abomination is a moderatly enjoyable game which is let down by weird ranges for weapons, poor graphics(don't listen to what the other reviews say here, my ancient Atari ST from 1988 could display far better than this!!!), poor sound effects (stupid, random noises make you want to break something after a few hours...), an annoying need to search bins for rocket launchers which takes 5 or 10 minutes of searching in EVERY level, an easy difficulty level, the fact that only the sniper rifle and sentry guns are decent and that the many different types of pistol are immediatly obsolete due to enemies always having assault rifles and shotguns from mission 1... I could go on listing the unforgivable mistakes about this game all day but it is still strangly enjoyable for a few hours. I think that this game would have been far better in every way(apart from the chunky graphics) if they based it around the Xcom Apocalypse engine so that you could incorporate the effects of modern weaponary so that each weapon has a specific role to play, eg. pistols are very useful as opposed to obsolete because they allow another pistol, a scanner, a medikit or grenade for example to be held ready for use in the other hand. I'm sure that they could have picked up the ageing but effective Xcom Apocalypse engine for next to nothing from Mythos. So much potential and most of it is wasted. The only thing I can think to sum this up is "what a shame".
