Unfortunately I'm one of those few that is plagued with getting cold sores on my lips. I seem to get one, or sometimes a couple in a small group, about 1-2 times a year. Usually due to going out in the sun for extended periods w/out wearing chap stick that contains sunblock, or spending too much time in windy dry conditions.
If you're like me, then cold sores are incredibly annoying and discomforting. Not only physically due to the itching, swelling and pain, but also socially because you feel like some sort of freak with this thing on your lip. When I get them, I want to get rid of them right away. I've tried several remidies over the years and none really seem to speed the healing process. They usually take about 5-7 days to clear up. I have run across one product that seemed to help the healing process but have been unable to find it since. It was lip balm that came in a container similar to the cylindrical shaped carmex and it was called Herpicin (or something close to that.)
So I about a week ago I started to get that itchy sensitive feeling and the slight bump on my lower lip. I knew what was coming and only two days later I was supposed to be in the mountains at a cabin with a bunch of friends, I sure as hell didn't want to show up with a big ol' cold sore on my lip. I went to the supermarket and started browsing through all the typical products. Then I stumbled upon Abreva and remember seeing it in a tv commercial. I about keeled over when I saw the price, $16 for lip balm!? But, I thought I'd give it try, 'cause if it really worked I'd spend 5 times that to get rid of a cold sore quickly. So I bought it, opened it up when I got to my car and this tiny little tube about 1/10 the size of the box fell out in to my hand. Very nice, you'd think for nearly $20 they could at least give you reasonably amount of this stuff.
I applied it as directed, 5 times a day, and within 2 full days it was almost completely gone. Now I know cold sores pretty well and I can tell you that within one day of the initial symptoms coming on it turns into a painfully itchy and swollen lump, very noticable and annoying. The swelling and cold sore growing process stopped almost immediately after the first application of Abreva and the initial symptoms actually decreased by the end of the day.
Bottom line, this stuff defintely works as advertised. From my experience, it will cut the healing time of your cold sore dramatically. For me, it's worth its weight in gold.
