pippadaisy's Full Review: Abreva Cold Sore/Fever Blister Treatment .07oz
Recently, my four-year-old daughter had her very first dance recital fast approaching. She also got her very first cold sore at the same time. With dance pictures and recital day coming up in next to no time, I was desperate to help her out as quickly as I could. A quick call to our pediatrician's nurse line okayed the use of Abreva so off I went to get it as soon as possible.
~&~ The Basics ~&~
Abreva is an over-the-counter remedy for cold sores and fever blisters. Sold in a 2.0 gram tube (.07 ounces), at approximately $15.00 per tube, it's pretty darn expensive. The active ingredient in Abreva is Docosanol (10%). Inactive ingredients are benzyl alcohol, light mineral oil, propylene glycol, purified water, sucrose distearate, and sucrose stearate.
To use, wash your hands before and after applying. Put a small amount on the cold sore or blister, rubbing in very gently, but until the cream is completely absorbed. The directions say to use the cream five times a day to shorten healing time and bring relief from tingling, pain, burning, and itching associated with the cold sore.
~&~ Our Experience ~&~
I have to admit that I haven't had many cold sores in my life (knock wood). The directions for Abreva say that for best results, it should be used at the first sign of a cold sore, but unfortunately, until it had reared its very ugly head, I had no idea my daughter had one brewing.
We didn't use the Abreva as often as directed; it was more like twice or three times a day. I could usually remember to apply it when my daughter got up or went to bed, and often before her nap, but to remember five times a day with three little ones just didn't happen. However, within two days with only the thrice daily application, we saw a noticeable improvement in her cold sore, well enough that it wasn't noticeable in pictures I took unless you pointed it out. By the fifth day, the cold sore was almost completely gone, and was unnoticeable unless you pointed it out.
The white cream had no noticeable scent, and my daughter did not report any uncomfortable side effects from application.
~&~ Recommendation ~&~
The price of this cream was out of this world, but I can honestly say that in this case it was worth it. Using it as often as we did, we didn't use up the entire tube (and I'm not sure exactly how much is in there as the tube seems much bigger than its listed volume), and it did the job quickly and easily. I wouldn't hesitate to use it again if we need it.
