susiewho's Full Review: Abreva Cold Sore/Fever Blister Treatment .07oz
Hubby is susceptible to cold sores. He gets them maybe three times a year but no matter how often or how little they make you feel awful and they don't look particularly attractive. They also make you infectious. He is always very careful about spreading it (air kisses) and I've never had any trouble due to contact. It's important tat you wash your hands frequently and don't touch other parts of your body after touching the affected area.
My hubby tried numerous products and feels pretty good about Abreva. These products for cold sores are available over the counter and not everyone has the same reaction. My sister has nothing good to say about Abreva, or Zilactin for that matter, but I attribute her lack of success to her particularly fragile health condition.
According to the site changes the cell membrane that surrounds healthy skin cells. This modified cell membrane then acts as a barrier to the cold sore virus, making it harder for the virus to get into the cell. This product is approved by the FDA.
Hubby immediately starts applying Abreva at the first tingle. Tingling is often the first sign although fatique, flu like symtoms sometimes precurse the tingling. Abreva comes in a very small tube , 2.0 grams, little tube, big package and is odorless and fast drying. Keep in mind it's easy to misplace since it's so small and it's pricey to replace. It gets absorbed into the skin as opposed to forming a seal like crust the way some other lip products do.
Cold sores are caused by the Herpes virus (Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV-1). They are very contagious even if the sore itself isn't present. It has no cure but it does have many treatments both over the counter and through prescription.
The site recommends applying the product five times a day and reapplying after meals. It promises to shorten the life of the cold sore. It holds up to it's claims for my husband, not for my sister.
The active ingredient in Abreva is Docosanol (10%). Inactive ingredients are benzyl alcohol, light mineral oil, propylene glycol, purified water, sucrose distearate, and sucrose stearate. The active ingredient is Docosanol (10%). It costs $15.00 for that tiny tube.
Directions: Wash your hands before and after applying as I mentioned above. Put a small amount on the cold sore or blister, gently rub it in until the cream is completely absorbed. It will shorten healing time and bring relief from tingling, pain, burning, and itching associated with the cold sore.
