| Rower227's Full Review: Absolut Vodka |
Although I drink proportionally more vodka than any other spirit, I tend to drink the same brand for a long period of time. I was first introduced to Absolut by my boyfriend. I have to admit that I was a bit of a vodka snob before, I would only drink Skyy. Once I tried it, though...Absolut ended Skyy's reign for good.
What's Good
Absolut is very smooth. It mixes incredibly well in just about any mixed drink I've tried. Feel like doing shots? It works great with those, too. Unlike a vodka of lesser quality, Absolut doesn't taste like rubbing alcohol. It's that unpleasant taste of cheap vodka that turns off so many folks to shots...but one of the best ways to enjoy Absolut (in my opinion) is by chilling a bottle in the freezer and then doing straight shooters, no chaser.
What I'm quite fond of is Absolut's flavored vodkas. The Mandrin and Citron flavors, especially, add a special touch to your drinks. Although other distillers have flavored vodkas, I really prefer Absolut's...the smoothness of their normal vodka is combined with delicate, yet robust flavors to create a truly elegant flavored vodka.
What's Not So Good
Absolut costs money. I know it may sound stupid, but as a college student on a budget, I can't afford to be buying a lot of it. Although not as expensive as Grey Goose or other premium vodka, a liter of Absolut will put a dent in your wallet. It makes it difficult when you buy a lovely bottle of good vodka and your friends drink it all, leaving you with Popov. :)
Absolut is also not what I consider to be a particularly flavorful vodka. I know that the whole point of vodka is that it has no distinct flavors, but I do appreciate Skyy, for example. Skyy has very distinct undertones, which I find totally lacking in Absolut. Again, if you want a vodka that tastes like alcoholic water, go for Absolut by all means...it's smoothness is one of its best qualities. If you're looking for a smooth vodka with subtle undertones of flavor, go for Skyy or Grey Goose.
