Absolut is the most recognizable of vodka brands. It's a good, reliable mid-range liquor. That is to say, it's not the best, but it's far from the worst.
If vodka defined social standing, Absolut would be the crest of the upper middle-class. This is a good vodka if you like mixed drinks. For martini drinkers like myself, it leaves a little to be desired.
I like dry vodka martinis, that's a martini with vodka and not much else. Hold the olives too, please. I drink martinis because I like the taste of the alcohol, and Absolut comes in a little below the standard for me in this regard. It's not a straight-drinking liquor. But if you're out to buy quality in quantity, Absolut is the one for you.
If you're looking for a vodka to mix drinks for a party, or to fill a punch-bowl, you'd do well to get Absolut. Besides the brand recognition, you get a vodka that hides itself easily among fruity flavors. I've tried several of the variations on the Absolut theme (Citron, Peppar), and I haven't been too crazy about them. But the old original is a sure stand-by.
Absolut also blends well with other alcohols in drinks. Most mixed drinks that require vodka and another liquor or liqueur won't be hurt by Absolut's understated taste. Though they might be improved by a pricier vodka's mellowness. I'm just saying here that you won't mistake it for turpentine in your cocktail.
In my opinion, Absolut is where vodka starts. You can get better brands, but anything worse isn't vodka - it's lighter fluid.
