* Feeling the nudge of his elbow bringing me out of a deep, pleasant sleep. *
'No hon'. my husband says. 'You were not actually dreaming.'
'But, how can ANYTHING be this good and it not be a dream?' I ask him while looking down at the pack in my hand.
'If you think that one is good'. He says as he takes the old Accu-Chek from me. Then you will think this one was sent from heaven.
He hands me a new pack, same color black as the other. But this one feels different, stiffer, an ounce heavier. Could it actually be true? Could Roche had come up with something that made my life as pain free as the other Accu-Chek and keep up with all my tests, carbs, cholesterol, medications, exercise, and even whether I was under any stress or not at that particular time?
Nah! I couldn't believe it. It's just another machine that reads the plasma in my blood. Nothing grand, nothing spectaular, nothing worth getting excited over.
'That's okay.' I say somewhat disappointedly. 'I just stick to this one.'
'I think you're making a mistake babe!'
'Oh well, it's my mistake to make. Not yours.'
'True, but don't be mad at me when I get to say I TOLD YOU SO.'
And all was fine and dandy with my old faithful too. That is, until the day I went to test my glucose level and it begins to bleep 'low battery' - 'low battery' - 'low battery'.
Ugh! 'Not now.' I grumble to myself just before I remember the other Accu-Chek. I grab it, flip it over to take the batteries out then turn mine over to take the batteries out and instantly find myself even more frustrated.
Okay, so my old faithful takes those quarter sized watch batteries and the new Accu-Chek Complete requires nothing more than 2AAA batteries that almost everyone keeps in the junk drawer of there kitchen.
Money less and penniless I am resorted to using the Accu-Chek Complete. I turn it on and immediately notice the fabulous difference. Almost instantly you are taken to a menu that allows you to choose from running a glucose test to actually reading a diary that you have (previously) entered.
In fact, you have six options to choose from, including Check Battery! , Edit/Enter Data, Set Date and Time, Set Options, and as I previously mentioned, Run Glucose Test and Review Memory.
A busy mother of one or more children, a working mother of any children, a man with a career the size of Texas, a child lacking the responsibility, or like me, an adult lacking the responsibility. If you are any of the above, or maybe someone that has not crossed my mind, then you will enjoy having the Accu-Chek Complete.
Mind you, it's not a machine for someone who does not have to, need to, or does not want to keep up with what carbohydrates they have eaten, what insulin medications they have taken, a reminder to visit your doctor or even one that needs to know when the battery is low. If you can do all this without a machine, then you really do not need the Accu-Chek Complete.
Accu-Chek Complete is simply a glucose tester that has been created to make a busy person's life a little easier when it come to managing their diabetes. Although this device is not an aid in curing it or conquering it, it sure does relieve the stress that can add to a higher amount of sugar in the blood stream.
For those who are not diabetic, let me give you a quick summary of how diabetes kills. It's a silent, deadly disease that can cost you or your love one the loss of their vision, the use of there feet by amputation, kidney failure and the most likely, heart attacks.
There are two types of Diabetes. A type 1 diabetic is 'usually' diagnosed as a child. It can occur in adults though, so don't let that fool you. Type 1 Diabetes is where the pancreas cannot or does not produce enough insulin. Insulin is needed to 'suck' in the glucose from the blood stream into the blood cells. There are little 'receptors' on each blood cell that the insulin attaches to. Then the insulin 'sucks' or draws the glucose into the cell.
The other type of Diabetes is Type 2. This is commonly found in overweight people and elderly adults. This is normally caused by the lack of receptors on the blood cells that attract the insulin that in return draws the glucose into the cell. This lack of receptors is usually caused by a 'slow' life style, or as the professionals say, a 'sedentary' life style. Obviously climbing the stairs twenty times a day and cooking three times a day and washing clothes once a day and cleaning the house two times a day is considered sedentary.
The following is how Diabetes can kill….
The eyes; diabetes over the years causes extra blood vessels to grow in the eyes. It also causes blood vessels to leak. Extra blood vessels can burst and so can leaky vessels. As the vessels leak the area begins to darken. You will see black spots, like dirt over your eyes, which will never go away. Even if the leaky vessels are operated on, there is no correcting the damaged tissue. Once they burst, you are in total blackness for the rest of your life.
Kidney failure; the extra glucose in your body causes your body to think it is dehydrating. In return you constantly stay thirsty. If you don't drink enough liquid, your kidneys work over time trying to flush out the extra glucose. This is stressful on your kidneys and eventually wears them out.
Loss of legs/feet by amputation; Because of diabetes, your arteries, shrink. Actually, they harden, creating a limited blood supply to your lower limbs. This causes any wounds to be more prone to higher infection risks and slower healing rates. If an infection is the result of even the smallest wound, the chances of it healing are slim unless you seek the help of a doctor. Diabetics are suppose to check their feet every single night, inspecting them for cuts, bruises, black calluses, in grown toe nails, or any harm that may have occurred to them over the day.
Heart Attacks; Hardening of the arteries creates a lesser blood flow with less oxygen. We all know what happens when this occurs.
And this my friend is the reason why a diabetic should keep track of so many things like exercise, blood sugar levels, carbohydrates, etc…….
This can be done by a great little machine that is smaller than the palm of your hand, the Accu-Chek Complete. Remember the Complete. That's what makes all the difference!
