Anyone who has a garden should consider using the Ace Soaker Hose from Ace Hardware. Using this hose can help you grow a beautiful garden, while saving up to 70 percent of your water usage.
A Soaker Hose is basically a hose that is blocked at one end, and has tiny holes where the moisture can seep through into your garden. You can lay the hose out in a long stretch, or gently weave it through your garden to follow the plant rows. As long as you are careful not to kink the hose, you can wind it up and down the rows as needed, and have water seeping steadily to areas where it is needed.
If your garden is next to your faucet, you can attach this hose directly. If not, you will need to use a standard garden hose to get the soaker hose within the range of the area you want to water. When attaching the hose, be certain that it is seated firmly so that your water does not leak around the fittings.
You can lay your Soaker Hose on top of the soil along your garden rows, or for even better results, you can bury it an inch or two under the soil. Once you have the Soaker Hose in place, just turn the faucet on a bit so you have a gentle flow of water. Be careful not to turn the water on too far because you don't want a high pressure building up in the Soaker Hose, just a gentle flow so the water can seep out slowly to gently water your plants. Higher pressure may cause damage to your hose, thus rendering it useless.
Using a Soaker Hose is easy, and does a better job than traditional sprinkler or other types of irrigation systems because rather than spray the water all over, it concentrates it on the roots of the plants, where it is needed. By soaking the soil, and thus the roots of the plant, you conserve water because you don't have the amount of evaporation that you get from spraying the water into the air. It also is more healthy for the plants because some plants prefer the water soaking their roots, rather than hitting their delicate leaves on a hot sunny day.
In addition to keeping evaporation to a minimum, using the Soaker Hose also prevents puddles and runoff that can cause soil erosion because the water slowly seeps from the hose and soaks directly into the soil and to the roots of your plants where it is needed. It works great for gardens, flowerbeds, and shrubs, wherever you need a gentle watering system that will help keep your plants healthy and beautiful.
The Ace Soaker Hose comes with a flow restrictor, which is a small plastic disk with a hole in the center, to help restrict water flow. This helps to protect the Soaker Hose from damage that could be caused by excessive water pressure.
Even with a Soaker Hose, you should always monitor the irrigation of your plants to ensure that they are not getting too much water. If you keep an eye on your garden for at least the first few times you use this irrigation method, you will quickly get a good idea of how long you should leave your hose running for best results. I use a 'Y' adapter to split the flow between two hoses, then change it periodically from the vegetable garden to the flower garden. It works really well and keeps my flowers and vegetables looking healthy and beautiful.
Ace Soaker Hoses come in a variety of sizes to suit your needs. This one measures 50 feet long by 1/2 inch diameter, which is best suited for my gardening needs. It is made in the United States, and consists of 65 percent recycled materials.
As with most hoses these days, the package warns that you should not drink water from the hose. You should also never run hot water through the hose because it could cause damage to the hose. Draining the hose for storage and when not in use is recommended, especially during extremely hot or freezing temperatures to prevent damage to the hose.
Ace Soaker Hoses are recommended for anyone with a garden. It works great to keep plant roots moist without causing soil erosion or puddles. It is a healthy and environmentally friendly way to tend your garden.
