Pros: Very solidly built, fast scans, acceptable results, still supported up to Windows XP
Cons: Not many features compared to today's scanners
The Bottom Line: It's a cheap workhorse that's still supported with the latest Windows operating systems (Windows XP) that delivers speedy, decent results and will probably last forever.

| digitalquirk's Full Review: AcerScan 620U Flatbed Scanner |
I've had this scanner for years. Shoot, it must be coming up to eight or nine years old now. I've used it a lot over the years, and it still keeps on working.
The 620u is a 1200x600dpi 36 bit scanner that will scan just a little longer than an 8.5"x11" sheet of paper. Not much more to say about this scanner; it's quite basic by today's standards and lacks a slide/negative scanning attachment. The manual does mention an optional adapter for this, but I've never seen one. That said, the results have always been quite acceptable, and the scanner is remarkably fast and the MiraScan software is quite rich with options. If you need a workhorse and come across one of these for cheap, you can't go wrong.
It does work with Windows XP, but you need to download the latest version of MiraScan. The software that came on the CD will not work with Windows XP. I use MiraScan V4.03 on my Windows XP system, and it works fine.
The tricky part in locating the driver is the fact that this scanner is no longer supported by Acer. Instead, it's now supported by Benq. Which means you need to go to www.benq.com, select support, pick your country, pick scanner, then you will find 620U on the list. Click on drivers, and you get to select the right one for every Windows OS from '98 on up!
Some interesting and versatile things I have used this scanner for include faxing documents (using the faxmodem in my computer), photocopying documents (scanning then printing to my printer), getting text from a typed document using an OCR, and scanning in really old pictures to fix them on my computer. Before I got a digital camera, I also used it for putting my pictures on the internet. It's still very useful for these uses today.
I hope this helps people out; it really is a good, solid piece of computer equipment. To send one to a landfill because someone can't find the driver is a shame.
