Cons: Not professional quality. Scanning documents to file requires lots of editing.
The Bottom Line: This scanner is easy to use and adequate for home use tasks. I have no reservations in recommending it.

I paid $49.95 for the scanner and installed it with no problems. The USB connection works fine--parallel is too slow or a scanner. It is handy for copying documents--greytone photo mode does a clean copy of printed graphics--a little better than the printed matter setting.
Photos scan well for internet messaging, and I actually scanned a brochure photo and framed the printed copy to hang at the office. A flatbed scanner does more careful work than a roll-through or multi-purpose machine.
The scanner has a black background under the cover, so you need to mask it with a blank page whenever you copy something small like a clipping or a rebate slip. Otherwise, you'll use a lot of black ink unnecessarily
The Ulead software that came with it may seem a little juvenile when it boots, but it has a lot of features and is no chore to learn. Somewhat later I took a day-long digital photography class through work. They use the Ulead software at the training center and speak highly of it.
The copier routine is straightforward. Click on the icon and a menu comes up that looks like a copier keypad. Select the quantity of prints, the type of original (color photo, greyscale photo, or printed document), the clarity (high or low) and click on the "Copy" button. Printer operation is automatic. It isn't fast, but it beats getting in the car and running to kinko's.
I appreciate the Acer scanner more after my daughter got an HP scanner - same price range. 5 months later, the HP scanner hasn't worked yet.
