  • Ease of Use:

Pros:Exceptional price, excellent resolution, simple setup, great warranty.

Cons:Half inch of unused horizontal screen space.

The Bottom Line: The Acer G235H is an inexpensive large-screen monitor with HD resolution, exceptional warranty, quality construction and attractive appearance.

I recently upgraded my computer tower and monitor.  For the computer, I opted for a Lenovo tower that operates at 2.7 GHz with 3GB RAM, DDR3.  The process of selecting a monitor went quickly.  I have been checking advertisements over the past few weeks, to include many of the "Black Friday" deals, watching for a decent priced monitor to upgrade from my old 19 inch Prosonic.  The Acer G235H quickly caught me eye.

So what was it about the G235H that captured my attention?  It was the pricetag.  I was in Tigerdirect (CompUSA) checking out the towers when I strolled through the monitor section.  The monitors are arranged according to size, going from smaller to larger.  I thought that the pricetag on the Acer G235H must have been misplaced.  The price was listed at $139, which is more along the lines of what the 19 inch models were listing for.  The monitors on either side of this one were in the two hundred dollar range, and one I had never even heard of (AOC).  When I looked closer at the price, it indicated it was indeed correctly placed.  That prompted further research.

I have had Acer products in the past and trust the brand.  While it is not what I would consider a top tier company, they make a solid line of products.  This particular model was the full 1080p resolution.  The full HD aspect appealed to me because it will allow me to watch Netflix on my new, larger monitor in full HD.  The 16:9 aspect ratio also appealed to me, since I was replacing a more standard flat-screen model.  The actual resolution is listed at 1920 x 1080 at 60 Hz.  The monitor has a 5 ms response rate.  While that isn't operating at lightning speed, it is drastic improvement from my last model.  It means my video refresh should be undetectable to the eye when I do watch movies.  I don't game, but understand that is a respectable refresh rate for gaming, too.  The colors are listed at 16.7 million.

I hooked my monitor up to my computer using the traditional 15 pin VGA connector (those blue connectors with the double screw pins).  The unit also has the capability of connecting via a DVI-D connector (the cables for both connections are included).  That connector allows for an even higher resolution video experience, but my tower is not equipped with the correct configuration to connect using the DVI-D.  Bummer.  Either way, that option is available on this device if your computer is equipped to transmit using DVI-D ports.  I am unsure how an adapter would affect the resolution, but assume it would degrade it if you are forced to use the VGA port on your computer.  Comments on that would be welcome in the comment section.

The Acer G235H takes up plenty of room across the back of my desk, but very little depth.  The unit is just shy of sixteen inches tall by nearly twenty-two inches wide.  The pedestal is seven and a half inches deep, but the monitor itself is only a fraction of that.  The unit isn't entirely lightweight, but only tips the scales a bit over ten pounds (10.8 pounds to be exact).  The model is considered Energy Star compliant, which doesn't mean much entirely by itself.  In standby mode, it sips .72 Watts.  In sleep mode, it is only slightly more active at .76 Watts.  It typically consumes 31.7 Watts when active.

The Acer G235H has an anti-glare screen that makes it viewable at 160 degrees, both vertically as well as horizontally.  I would suggest that you don't get a glare, even at 180 degrees, which would be viewing the monitor directly from the side.  However, you can't really tell what you are looking at much past 100 degrees, so the 160 degree viewing angle is more than adequate.

The Acer G235H comes with a three-year limited warranty, which exceeds many other manufacturer warranties.  Any time you can get electronics warrantied past the first year, you are doing good.  The store tried to sell me an extended warranty, but I don't think that is much required for this unit.  The warranty appears to be pretty good, stating that Acer will provide replacement parts, repair or replace (minus depreciation) during the three year warranty period.  It can be mailed or carried in.  The warranty also applies to technical support.  It does not include damage caused by misuse, service by an unauthorized source, usage not in compliance with product instructions, normal wear and tear, cosmetic damage, if serial numbers are missing or damage from improper transportation/packaging.  Basically, the warranty covers manufacturer defects, which is standard for most warranties.

When I set up my computer and monitor, I noticed that the display window did not fully fit the screen and that the date portion of my task bar was halfway obscured.  I clicked on the task bar on the red ATI icon, which brought up an options menu for the monitor.  This menu was intuitive to use and allowed me to adjust my monitor to allow me to see the full task bar.  It also allowed me to center the viewing window within the screen area of the monitor, but left about a half inch of unused screen on either side.  It is a small issue, but seems like a waste of good screen space.  The menu did not allow me to "fit" my viewing area into the full confines of the screen, so I basically have a half inch of unusable screen (a quarter inch on each side).  I am not sure why Acer would make a 23 inch monitor that only has 22.5 inches of usable space, but that is what they succeeded in doing.  That will cost a point.

Overall, I am satisfied with the quality of my monitor.  The colors and contrast are crisp.  The refresh rate is more than I require for my usage.  The viewing angles exceed my needs (I have to lean over my desk intentionally just to reach those angles).  The warranty is exceptional.  The brand is one that I have come to trust.  And most importantly, the price was unbelievable.  For $139, a 23 inch monitor cannot be touched.  This one is HD at 1080p, with a great refresh rate.  The monitor control panel is easy to activate and intuitive to use.  My only issue is the quarter inch of unused space on either side of my screen.  It seems wasteful.  Maybe it is something within my computer settings and not the monitor.  Maybe not.  The monitor software did not help me resolve the issue, so either way, this monitor is a solid four stars.
