| surajit's Full Review: Acer TravelMate 261X (91.49S01.00U) PC Notebook |
After a year of this, I was forced to shell out for a lighter notebook (Samsung Q10). These kind of notebooks are not really good if you happen to travel a lot.
I do and find it almost impossible to add anything to the carrying case without being in serious danger of dislocating my shoulder. If you are looking for a compact desktop then consider this. Otherwise you are better off, paying more for a really light notebook.
EARLIER REVIEW
I have just upgraded to the Acer Travelmate notebook. Well it is my first notebook and now I can FINALLY understand why a notebook is so much more of a useful tool than a PC can ever be.
First off the freedom of having all your files with you, when you need it, where you need it. No need to lug around floppy drives or worse still paper for working at home or when I travel. The pleasure and joy of having all my files with me is something I can learn to enjoy. I have recently begun to travel a lot (almost two weeks a month on the road). I can now really appreciate this ability to have my work travel with me.
Second, I am a touch typist and really enjoy working on the Acer's keyboard. The keys are so soft and tactile it is a pleasure using it. I really feel I have become faster on the keys than I even was on a PC and this within a week of use.
Third, I find the mouse pad to be quite neat. Though nothing can really compare with a mouse, this one is good enough for the kind of work you do when away from the desk. I had a choice between and IBM and this Acer, but went for the Acer (not because it was cheaper--my company was paying) but because I just hate having to use the J-mouse. This mousepad is so much better.
The standard battery that comes with this systems seems to be adequate for most average users. I have been running it on battery for over three hours now and really draining it as I have my modem on, the CD playing, and have not done any tweaking to put it on the power saving mode. According to the indicator I still have over 40 mins of battery power left and that is great.
One other advantage I have to mention with a notebook is how less wires I have now. With a PC it is really a nightmare navigating its backside as there are just so many wires coming and going in all different directions. With a notebook, it just looks so neat and clean and the wires are so easy to place--there are so few of them.
The only disadvantage with this particular model of Acer is the weight. Dont know how much exactly it weighs, but it feels like a ton, especially when you have to walk more than half an hour with this thing slung to your shoulder. I have seen some really light-weight ones and can appreciate why people like to use those. They are more expensive...but in the long run, if your budget stretches go for one that is as light as you can get.
