| dlstewart's Full Review: Acme KleenEarth Recycled Stainless Scissors 9" Str... |
I inherited a pair of ancient scissors that were all metal and horribly uncomfortable to use. I needed a new pair of office scissors
but I didnt want to spend a lot of money. After some research, I decided to purchase the Acme Kleenearth Recycled Stainless-Steel Scissors -- 9 size.
Description
These are nice looking scissors that are 9 long. One of the stainless steel blades is marked Acme Kleenearth to indicate that the scissors are made from recycled material. The blades create a 4 cut (not the 3 3/4 cut listed in the description).
A plastic rivet holds the blades to the black plastic handle. The handles are hard
no cushion grip. These scissors are advertised as having an ergonomic grip. The bottom handle is contoured and has a 2 oval opening. The top handle, where the thumb rests, has a 1 1/4 opening. According to the manufacturer, the handles contain 70% post-consumer recycled plastic.
My Experiences
I had high hopes for these scissors. I liked the idea of the longer cutting blade. A big selling point for me was the use of recycled material as well as the reasonable selling price.
However, the first time I inserted my hand into the plastic handles, I felt discomfort. The handles look inviting and well shaped. However, they catch my hand wrong, and it hurts my hand to use them. Its fine to cut one of two pieces of paper with these scissors, though using them for any length of time is awful.
Since these handles are composed from a very hard plastic, there is no give. I doubt that a comfort grip handle would help since the shape and spread of the handles are wrong for my hand. In case you are wondering, my hands are large (not overly large but definitely not petite!). I have used many other types of scissors without problem.
The blades of these scissors work well. They are sharp. The scissor action is smooth, and they cut great. They slice through a few sheets of paper with ease. These scissors can cut through 10 pages of 20-pound copy paper with a bit of effort but have trouble with more than that amount.
Also, I had hoped to use these scissors as a blade for opening boxes that were sealed with packing tape. I dont have a box opener, so opening a pair of scissors to use one of the blades as a cutter would have been a great convenience. However, these scissors do not open wide enough to effectively use one of the blades to slice through package sealing tape. It is very awkward (and almost dangerous) to use these scissors as a box opener.
Purchasing
I bought these scissors from StaplesLink.com for $3.55. Buying them from Stapleslcom would have cost $7.95
so at least I received a price break.
Summary
Would I purchase another pair of Acme Kleenearth Recycled Stainless-Steel Scissors? While I like the idea of supporting recycled products, I would have to say no. These scissors are uncomfortable to use, though they do work well. If I can entice a co-worker to take these scissors, Ill definitely be shopping for a better pair.
I hope you found this review useful.
