| dlstewart's Full Review: Acme Titanium Bonded Scissors 8" Straight Trimmers... |
My lucky coworker received a 2-pack of Acme Titanium 8" Straight Scissors from the companys office supply buyer. All she had asked for was one pair of scissors, so I begged for the other pair. Im a scissor lover. Perhaps its because I enjoy sewing and am surrounded by lots of fun scissors and rotary cutters.
Description
This is a nice looking pair of scissors that measure 8" in length. The straight titanium blades are 3 1/2" long. When fully open, the blades have a 6 1/4" spread. The two-tone color handle is mostly a hard plastic in a dove-gray color with the inside of the contoured handles a slightly softer bright yellow plastic material. Acme calls the handles a soft grip.
The titanium blades are three times harder than stainless steel and resistant to rust and corrosion. According to the back of the blister card, Acme uses a process that bonds titanium to a stainless steel core to produce a sharper, more durable, and longer-lasting cutting edge ....
My Experiences
The other day I cut catalog pages for 45 minutes straight. I was also having a problem with my cutting hand (related to a bruised elbow and arm). These Acme Titanium scissors are lightweight, and the scissor action is incredibly smooth. The blades glide against one another with hardly any effort. My fingers also fit inside the contoured grip with ease. For 45 minutes, I cut catalog pages without a single twinge of discomfort. I could have kept cutting those catalogs for longer, too, but I wasnt about to extend my project.
One problem occurred while cutting the catalog pages. The paper broke when the scissor tips met. Instead of producing a straight clean cut, the tips of the scissors broke the paper so that the cut fractured in several directions. Granted, the fractures were small, but I needed crisp clean cuts. Since my catalog cutting project was important, I had to pay careful attention so that I did not cut any photo using the tips of the scissors.
As an experiment, I used the scissors to cut regular 20-pound copy paper. The cut at the tips of the scissors produced a tiny almost unnoticeable break in the paper.
Having dealt with the catalog pages so well, I was curious how these scissors would handle fabric. After asking permission, I borrowed the scissors for the weekend to use them during one of my quilting projects. The blades sliced through thread as if it wasnt even there. I also used them to cut 100% cotton fabrics that I used to piece crazy quilt blocks. Single, double, even four layers of fabric cut with ease ... as long as the thicker layers of fabric were at the back of the blades, near the center axis of the scissors. If I cut two or more layers of fabric, closing the scissor blades all the way to the point, the fabric did not cut where the ends of the scissors met. Experimenting, I tried opening and closing the scissor points on two layers of fabric. The scissors just sawed against the fabric without cutting it. However, the scissors performed fine when cutting one layer of material.
Back at the office, I used the scissors to cut foil, plastic packaging and cardboard. The scissors worked great ... except when the tips of the scissors met. Most noticeable on the cardboard, the cardboard broke in a slightly jagged line where the tips of the scissors came together.
Since these titanium scissor blades are also supposed to resist the stickiness of glue and tape better than other metal blades, I tested them on a variety of gummy and taped surfaces. Its true. I cut the gummy end of a packing envelope and several different types of tape. The blades are smooth and not sticky.
The soft grip handle is not cushy soft. There is no give to the material. Yet my fingers easily fit into the grip, and the handles do not dig into my skin.
Purchasing
Our office supply buyer purchased this two-pack of Acme Titanium 8" Straight Scissors at Staples for $17.99. A single pair of these scissors sells for $9.95 at Staples. OfficeMax offers one pair of these scissors for $9.99.
Summary
These Acme Titanium 8" Straight Scissors have a lot of positive aspects. They are extremely lightweight, comfortable to hold and use, cut with ease and even resist sticky residue from adhering to the blade. My one complaint about these scissors is that the tips do not cut a clean crisp line. If you are doing a project where you dont need the accuracy and clean cut from the scissor tips, then these are an excellent pair of scissors. However, if using 100% percent of the scissor blade for cutting accurate lines is important, then you may want to try another pair of scissors.
I hope you have found this review useful.
Enjoy your day,
