Sneezing & Running
I was helping clean out my mother's apartment for over a week in 2005 when I began to sneeze. My nose was running so bad I had to constantly reach for tissues. When I ran out of tissues, I had to reach for a roll of toilet tissue. That night I was unable to sleep with my runny nose.
Drip, drip, drip
Thinking it was a cold or/and allergies to the dust, I stopped at the nearest pharmacy on my way home the next day. Unsure of what to buy, I briefly read the descriptions in the front of the box to narrow it down to one which was suitable for me symptoms. Since there are so many cold OTC medicines, it was a difficult decision. Price at that point was not relevant. I narrowed it down to this COLD & ALLERGY - ACTIFED since that seemed to be the one with my 3 concerns of runny nose, sneezing and watery eyes. I read the back of the box which is important before purchasing any product for allergies or useful information pertaining to personal individual requirements.
ACTIFED
Used for:
- Nasal Congestion
- Runny Nose
- Sneezing
- Itchy, Watery Eyes
This One Tablet Dose comes in a blister-pack secured and will expire June 2008. This date is on the back of the blister-pak. It's made by Pfizer since 1958 who is committed to excellence and stands behind their products, made with highest quality standards.
The "Active Ingredients" are; Nasal decongestant (Pseudoephedrine HCI 60mg.) and Antihistamine (Triprolidine HCI 2.5mg.). Inactive ingredients" are; flavor, hypromellose, lactose, polyethylene glycol, potato starch, povidone, sucrose and titanium dioxide. The new packaging sold contains a New Formula but is used for the same symptoms.
The back of the package contains important information besides the ingredients such as information about, Drug Facts, Uses, Warnings, Directions, Other Information, and Questions? with phone number 1-800-524-2624 weekdays 9 - 5 EST. Updated product information for United States residents only can be found at the following website; http://www.pfizerch.com/product.aspx?id=46.
However, after reading an article on
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Actifed I learned the formula I have was "Full Precription Strength" and the newer formula is not as effective as this older version which may still be available by asking your pharmacist.
Since I didn't know how many day's supply I needed, I chose the box with 24 tablets. This package also comes in a box of 12 but at that store it was not available. It said to take 1 every 4 to 6 hours but not take more than 4 doses in 24 hours for adults and children over 12. Children 6-12 half a dose. Not for children under 6 without fist consulting with your doctor. I was in a hurry to get out of there and start using this. The cost was $6.69 at Eckerd Pharmacy. It said it may cause drowsiness which it did. It is important before buying any medicine to read the back of the box completely.
ACTIFED comes in a variety of formulas with different variations based on the common cold, sinus conditions and allergies.
Conclusion
I started taking it the same day. It seemed to start working immediately. After each dose wore off, the symptoms would return but not as bad as before starting these tablets. I noticed the relief slowly and was glad I used this product. I stopped taking them the end of the second day with the 7th dose. I was able to function and go about my business without the annoying symptoms I started with.
Colds sometimes can linger for weeks if not stopped and taken care of when symptoms appear and oftentimes they may get worse if not treated quickly. I was trying to avoid getting a sinus infection. These symptoms occur at least once a year for me and having the right combination available is very important to me.
I have recommended this to friends and relatives that have had similar symptoms.
