Help the Penguins Get to Antarctica

Written: Jun 25 '08
Pros:Fun to play as penguins
Cons:Annoying background music
The Bottom Line: This is a fun game for young kids and penguin lovers, but it is a little lacking in depth and has somewhat annoying background music.

This game is based on the Penguins from Madagascar. It starts with a level that is based on The Penguins in a Christmas Caper, which was a short movie that came on a separate Holiday DVD at some locations when you bought the Madagascar DVD. In this level you help rescue the penguin from being a dog’s chew toy Christmas present. After this short level it skips forward 9 months to an all new plot featuring the penguins. The game plot is about the Captain Penguin telling the others that they belong in Antarctica and having a plan to dig to Antarctica. Thus the game involves you playing as a penguin character and working through the levels to eventually get the penguins to Antarctica.

The game is a pretty straightforward and easy to play adventure game. This makes it good for kids, which I think is the main demographic this game will appeal to besides penguin lovers like me. The controls involve using A to jump, holding A for maximum height, using B to attack, using the arrow pad to move around, and using L to toboggan (slide on belly and get through low spots or down toboggan courses).

As you go through the levels you try to collect all the medals that are placed in the level. The amount of medals accumulate in an overall stat shown in the upper right corner when on menus selecting levels. Each time you collect 100 your health meter’s maximum increases by one fish. To regain health that is lost pick up green fish or gold fish.

Overall this game is a fun game for kids up to around ages 9 or 10. It is kind of easy to beat, so it may not entertain for too long. It does, however, still have a decent amount of level. The graphics are not amazing, but they are good quality Game Boy Advance graphics. The game’s sound is not all that interesting and I enjoy playing it without the sound because it is just a kind of weird background music with a mix of drum playing and triangle like instrument sounds.
