Spider-Man, Spider-Man, does whatever… We all know that familiar tune, and Activision brings us the ultimate Spider-Man game in Spider-Man Friend or Foe. In this great game, the player gets to be Spider-Man, or any one of the companions that he picks up along the way. The theme of Spider-Man Friend or Foe revolves around Spider-Man battling the forces of evil, teaming up with some branch of the government, being picked up by a secret agency aboard a Helicarrier. Aboard this spacecraft, Spider-Man will find everything he needs to play the game. He will find the game options, his inventory and store, his mission selector, etc.
Spidey starts out in Tokyo, Japan. Each world location is comprised of four separate missions, each ending with Spider-Man confronting one of his old enemies. These enemies are controlled by some sort of mind control device, and Spider-Man must defeat them in battle so he can break the spell of this mind control. When you defeat them, a little video is played and then they become Spider-Man’s companion. This is where the “Friend or Foe” part comes in.
When you return to the Helicarrier, you can choose which companion you want to accompany you on the next mission. The best is Scorpion, who has some awesome moves. The really cool part of this is that, while you are playing, you can switch between Spider-Man and his companion, utilizing both characters’ signature moves.
Spider-Man and his buddies battle these nasty creatures called Phantoms. They come in all sizes, from small little ones to big giants that take forever to beat. As Spidey battles his foes, he also interacts with his environment. There are boxes, containers, rocks and other things that can be broken to get to what is inside or used as weapons to throw at your foes. Most of them contain tokens, which Spidey gathers to purchase upgrades onboard the Helicarrier. He can also get power upgrades, mega damage and invincibility tokens. These come in handy when you are battling some of the larger phantoms. The power-ups are a must, as they regenerate Spider-Man’s health during battle. You can also gather these tokens each time you kill an enemy. Be quick though, as Spidey’s companions will also try to gather those same tokens. If they collect the tokens before you do, you won’t be able to use them.
Spider-Man has all sorts of cool moves to use on his enemies. As he progresses through the levels and gains more tokens, he can purchase upgrades to his web weapons. My favorite is where Spidey jumps high into the air, shoots his web down to the floor, which pulls him down with force, doing mega damage to any enemies within a small radius of where he lands. He can also swing from his web, shoot web shots from both hands, and a cool move where he encases his enemies in a huge coating of web, then attacks them while they can’t fight back. While the phantoms are hard to beat, the companions under mind control are super hard! You really have to think and be quick to beat them. The good part is that if Spidey is killed, you can continue the fight as his current companion.
The graphics for this game are incredible. It’s like playing a cartoon! The sounds, music and voices are good too, though Spider Man’s voice is not that of Tobey Maguire…Oh well, you can’t have it all. Good luck my friends. And, remember: With great power, comes great responsibility.
