| maggsmomm's Full Review: Activity Walker |
We purchased the Fisher Price Activity Walker for our daughter when she began pulling up on the furniture, also called "furniture walking." Although this product is a great concept, there is one drawback that could cause serious injury.
My daughter loves the toys on the Activity Walker. She will sit on the floor and play with them for 20 minutes at a time. (If you happen to be a mother, you know how valuable that 20 minutes is!) Fisher Price's Activity Walker has a mirror, a row of colored balls that slide, a yellow circular clicking toy (like the old rotary phones had) and colorful spinning plastic type cards. Children that are around 6 months find these things fascinating. The toys also fold down so it can be used as a doll carrier.
The Fisher Price Activity Walker is intended for those who are learning to walk and steady their tiny steps. It is made from durable plastic, and holds up well under extreme conditions. The handle bar is blue and has hand grips made of plastic also. My daughter drags it behind her through a maze of toys and likes ramming in into other toys, like her gyms and walkers and of course, the walls. I would say it has held up well with her abuse and her using it as a teething ring. This activity walker is also made of primary colors, that will attract even the youngest of children. The cats are not especially fond of this walker, as they have been "run over" numerous times. I suppose this is what charms my daughter about the product.
It does fold up nicely for storage, it doesn't take up much space when traveling, and can be packed away for the next baby. I seriously doubt once your child gets aquatinted with their very own Fisher Price Activity Walker you will be able to "put it away."
It does, however, have one major drawback that could be dangerous to your soon-to-be toddler. The wheels lock, as so they will not move in reverse. This is supposed to ensure their safety, in case they lose balance and fall backwards. The problem is the wheels are made of smooth plastic and have no traction. The locking mechanism does not prevent children from falling backwards and the walker falling on top of them. We have had many bumps and bruises from this walker, yet our daughter refuses to let us take it away from her. She is determined to use it as she pleases.
As this product is inexpensive and entertaining I would recommend it only with the strictest of supervision. I definitely would not let my child use it on hard surfaces, as there may be a danger of severe head injuries due to the wheels skidding and the walker falling over with baby. This product is intended for children ages 6 months and up.
One suggestion: My husband went to the craft store and bought some adhesive and cut rubber strips and applied them to the wheels. This has made for a safer "walk" or trot for your wee one. It provides much needed traction and ensures those wheels do not lock up and slide back.
