| soupcraze's Full Review: Acuvue Oasys with Hydraclear Plus |
I have for years have been wearing contact lenses. I also have very sensitive eyes, and am suffering from giant papillary conjunctivitis (GPC), a condition that makes it harder for me to comfortably wear lenses. Therefore, I am very particular about the lenses I wear. I require soft lenses that retain moisture and do not cause considerable irritating friction. I wear contact lenses in conjunction to using Zaditor eye drops twice daily to help control GPC, and am using the Clear Care contact solution made my Ciba Vision. I have been wearing the Acuvue Oasys contact lenses for a few weeks now, and would like to share with you my experiences.
-PRICE-
*I purchased the Acuvue Oasys contact lenses for roughly ~$25 and change at Costco. They are nearly twice as expensive as the trusted and popular Acuvue 2 lenses, which I was extremely satisfied with and have also worn for years. They are also more expensive than the Acuvue Advance contacts that I briefly wore and absolutely hated.
The lenses have what Johnson & Johnson calls "Hydraclear Plus." At first I was very skeptical, since I have had nothing but bad experiences with the Acuvue Advance lenses and their Hydraclear technology. Therefore, I decided to try a trial pair at first. I assumed that I would wear them for a couple days, then trash them because I assumed the experience would be similar to the Acuvue Advance. I was pleasantly surprised with excellent comfort that has exceeded other lenses that I have tried.
The Acuvue Oasys offer a new level of comfort that I have not experienced with other lenses. Even thoguh other lenses, such as the Acuvue 2 or Biomedics 55 gave me a "good" experience, the Acuvue Oasys gave me an "excellent" experience that I will elaborate on later in the review.
The Acuvue 2 lenses are great and for around $13/box can not be beat. Even though the Acuvue Oasys cost nearly twice as much, they really are an improved and different lens. For someone with sensitive eyes, or for someone looking for a high level of comfort, it is worth the price difference.
-COMFORT-
*Before trying the Acuvue Oasys, I had two contact lenses that I would consistently rely on for long sustainable comfort. They are the Acuvue 2 (slightly worse fluid retention of the two) and Biomedics 55 contact lenses. Those lenses are extremely comfortable and I do not feel like there is anything in my eyes for a very long time, with the Biomedics 55 being the most recent I have tried due to their exceptional fluid retention. When I first tried the Acuvue Oasys, they felt the same way. Extremely comfortable, like they weren't even there! So then, why would they be worth the considerable two-fold price difference? Let me tell you why...
Unlike the Acuvue 2 or Biomedics 55, the Acuvue Oasys felt thicker and had a "slimy" feeling. Just from opening the box and touching them, they all of a sudden felt very different. Despite appearing thicker, they were just as comfortable as the previously mentioned lenses. But there is one major advantage that the Acuvue Oasys had over the other lenses. I would not feel friction. Even though I was wearing comfortable contact lenses before, eventually I would feel like they were rubbing against my eyes. While the friction was not terrible, it made the lenses noticeable. When wearing the Acuvue Oasys, even for over twelve hours, I would feel absolutely no friction against my eyes. The water retention and comfort has remained superb over the lifetime of the lens. Therefore if you are someone that is a night-owl and wears contact lenses for an entire day, you would most likely benefit from these lenses, more so than what the Acuvue 2 lenses may offer. The extra comfort is worth the price. Is it worth it to you? If not, I still highly recommend other lenses such as the Acuvue 2.
-FLUID RETENTION-
*Initially I thought that these lenses would be as terrible as the Acuvue Advance. Wrong! These retained fluid better than other lenses I have tried. While the other lenses were nearly as good and quite a bit cheaper, the Acuvue Oasys had an advantage since they did not generate friction. I guess that the Hydraclear Plus technology really works, and makes quite a noticeable difference!
-DURABILITY-
*The lenses easily last the alloted two-week time frame. I have experienced no rips or any significant change in comfort. I take good care of my lenses and do not sleep in them. If it weren't for the GPC, I would be wearing them longer, as I have worn other lenses over a month. These lenses appear to be durable from what I have experienced so far.
-EASE OF USE-
*Who doesn't appreciate the "123" on the lenses. This is especially nice for beginners, since inserting the contact lens inside-out is always a painful experience! So remember to point the lens up to the light, and see if it reads "123." If it reads that then you are in the clear. If it reads "321," you have to turn it inside out! I always enjoyed this feature, and I believe it gives these lenses an edge over other manufacturers, which is especially important for beginners!
-CONCLUSION-
*After my terrible experience with the Acuvue Advance, I was skeptical. Despite this, I was so pleasantly surprised by the Acuvue Oasys that I decided to make these my primary lens. Even though these are rather pricey lenses, the extra comfort that they provide is worth it. If these are outside your budgets, I would still highly recommend other Johnson & Johnson lenses such as the Acuvue 2 which I have trusted for a long time. Johnson & Johnson has redeemed themselves and the Hydraclear technology, and have developed a sensational product that definitely delivers on its promises.
