| majella's Full Review: Advil Migraine |
As a migraine sufferer since birth, I am always looking for an over-the-counter medication to treat migraines. In the last year it seems everyone is putting out a migraine medication. But if you read the active ingredients, the only ones that matter, you'll find the ones with 'Migraine' attached to the end have the exact same ingredients as the regular ones. For example, regular Advil has 200 mg Ibuprofen and so doe's Advil Migraine. The only difference is the form in which the medication is delivered, Advil Migraine is a liquid filled capsules while regular Advil is tablet or caplet form. Big Whoopty-Do! Maybe a liquid delivers faster relief, but so what. Why pay the huge difference? Personally I have not found a liquid form to deliver relief faster. Do the Advil makers really think we are all a bunch of stupid brain dead idiots that do not read the active ingredient list?
As a Migraine sufferer, I have found Ibuprofen to actually make my migraines worse. I took a couple as per instructed, and about 20 minutes later I found my headache getting much stronger and intense. Anyone who experiences migraines knows the first few minutes to relief are the most important. If not relieved right away, it's all over with. Migraines are not your typical run of the mill headache, they are the queen mother of all headaches. If not put to a stop right away, they become monsters. Pounding, light and sound sensitivity, nausea, intense pain are common symptoms with duration times of up to weeks. Not something one wants to mess around with, specially when choosing a medication.
Advil is the brand name for Ibuprofen, a NSAID which falls into the same catagory as aspirin. Although not a aspirin product and doe's not contain aspirin, it should not be combined with aspirin or acetaminophen (Tylenol). People with aspirin sensitivity should not take this product due to allergic reactions. Advil and other Ibuprofen containing products should not be taken by pregnant women during the last 3 months of pregnancy due to it's causing problems in the unborn child or complications during pregnancy.
I do find however, if fever relief if needed or minor aches & pains need to be relieved, Advil works just fine for those not cursed with a history of Migraines. I believe Advil can actually cause a migraine for us.
I think Advil just jumped on the "Migraine" bandwagon along with Exedrin Migraine for the extra bucks it could sucker out of Migraine sufferers. Why not just buy regular Advil, it has the exact same ingredients as Advil Migraine and costs less. Besides, if Ibuprofen makes migraines worse, why market it for migraines at all? At least Exedrine Migraine works even though it also has the same ingredients as regular Exedrine. If you are a migraine sufferer, do as I have and throw away all the Ibuprofen products in your medicine cabinet. Your head will thank you.
