Cons: Can cause upset stomach in some.
Last week, I was absolutely sure that I had a double ear infection and the worst strep throat that I ever experienced. It was on a Saturday night that I came so close to going to the emergency room, I was in such pain I thought my ears were going to pop. But, I really dreaded the thought of going to the ER, and if I could just hold out 'til Monday, I could go to my regular doctors office just up the road, and save a bundle of money on the co-payment from the insurance company. I didn't think I could make it though, the pain was serious.
I have a pretty high tolerance for pain and I am one of those that will go forever before I will take any kind of medicine, the pain had to be unbearable. I got on the phone with the Pharmacist, and asked how much and how often "can" you take Ibuprofen. I already know that you can take up to 800mg. At a time (prescription strength) but I was not sure on how often. The Pharmacist confirmed what my original thought was, 800 mg no more than 3 times a day. Every 6 to 8 hours.
I told myself that if that does not work, then I would go to the ER. So, I went to my medicine cabinet, and there was the ADVIL. I took 4 of them, and tried to drink a little milk to coat my stomach and a few spoonfuls of leftover rice in the fridge and hoped for the best.
Half-hour later, the pain was subsiding. Although, I thought that it should be working to its full potential by now. But, 1 hour later and I was almost pain free. My earache was gone completely and the only time I felt my sore throat was when I swallowed and that pain was very small. RELIEF at last!
For the next day, I took the 800-mg of ADVIL every 8 hours until Monday at 1:30 when I could get an appointment at my doctor's office. Come to find out, I had a virus that caused my sore throat and a bunch of fluid to build up in my ears. There was nothing that she could give me to cure it, I just had to let it ride out its course. She gave me a nose spray that would help reduce the fluid build up, a decongestant to help with my runny nose and told me to continue taking the 800mg. Of ADVIL if it was doing the trick. She would call me in something stronger if it wasn't working fully. The ADVIL was working fine.
It has been about a week, I still have the virus, and a little pain, but the ADVIL has worked wonders. Now, I only have to take the regular 200mg. Dose to calm the leftover pain in my ear and to get through the day. ADVIL works, it really does!
