| ms_pookie's Full Review: Aero Pillowtop AeroBed Twin / Queen Size Mattress |
Before my husband and I were married, he moved to Southern California to start his residency. Instead of buying a real bed, he bought an AeroBed Pillowtop Aerobed (Queen).
The Product
The AeroBed Pillowtop Aerobed (Queen) was purchased at Costco for approximately $200.
The dimensions for the queen are as follow:
- 78"L X 60"W X 10"H
- Supports up to 750 lbs.
- Item weight: 22.7 lbs.
- Thickness of PVC: 18 gauge
- 22 gauge flocked PVC top

My Experience
The AeroBed is a fine product for occasional use, but for long-term use, it is a bit of a pain.
:Convenience:
What is nice about the AeroBed is that it is easy to use. The built-in pump is convenient and, with a simple push of a button, will inflate the bed. It also can be used to increase firmness of the bed. The motor is a bit loud and sounds a bit like a vacuum cleaner when it is operating. The bed inflates quickly.
The bed also deflates to a rather small package, which is great for storage. We did not deflate the bed often because we used it daily.
:Cleaning:
The AeroBed was actually quite easy to clean since it is made of PVC. I would wipe down the bottom of the bed. The pillowtop of the bed was a bit more tricky since it had a more velvety texture to it. After cleaning the AeroBed, it is important to let it dry completely before either storing it away or putting on the bedding.
:Comfort:
Sleeping on an AeroBed is better than sleeping on the floor, but there is a lot of room for improvement for comfort.
If one person moved or turned over in bed, the other person would feel it because the mattress would move and was actually a bit noisy.
I found that using the mattress cover increased comfort a bit, though it still left a lot to be desired. I found that my back would ache if the bed was not properly inflated. It would lose firmness every now and then and if I didn't inflate it to the proper firmness, then sleeping on the bed was a bit uncomfortable. It would lead to a creaky back in the morning. If the bed was inflated maximally, it was comfortable but I would still have a creaky back in the mornings. I missed my old bed with a regular mattress. The overall comfort of the AeroBed is slightly below average (C-). However, I would gladly take sleeping on the AeroBed than sleeping on the floor.
:Problems:
Speaking of sleeping on the floor, that's what happened several times because of the AeroBed. There would be a minute leak or puncture somewhere in the bed and it would gradually deflate. There's no point on sleeping on it because by the middle of the night, you would end up almost on the floor due to the escaping air. It is hard to find a leak or crack in the bed because it is usually very, very small so it takes a lot of patience to inspect every nook and cranny of the bed. Once the problem was located, it was easy to patch it up and that worked most of the time. However, after patching, there needs to be a good while for it to seal properly so that usually meant sleeping on the floor again.
The demise of the bed came when the Quadra Coils busted and made the AeroBed balloon up. I was actually relieved that it had busted because that meant we could actually purchase a REAL bed to sleep on. Thank goodness. It did take a while for the bed to complete bust -- two years of daily use!!!
:Miscellaneous:
My husband put the AeroBed directly on the floor, so getting up and out of bed was a bit tricky since you have to remember that you are very close to the floor. He had talked about purchasing mattress pads to improve comfort while I whined non-stop about getting a real bed. Thankfully, the AeroBed busted.
It is very important to keep the repair kit! Repairs will be needed, especially those pesky little leaks. Keep the repair kit in a place that is convenient so when the day comes that the AeroBed is semi-deflated due to a leak, you will have the kit handy.
Overall Thoughts
The AeroBed Pillowtop AeroBed would be a great mattress for overnight guests, but it is not ideal for every day use.
Thanks for reading!
