Pros:Access to GPS, cell phones, and garage door opener operation on a motorcycle
Cons:Difficult to provide outside power, thick GPS units will not fit.
The Bottom Line: Access to small gear and electronic units without cluttering your handle bars.
Where to put cell phones, garage door openers, MP3 players, GPS, and maps on a motorcycle, snowmobile, or hiking gear can be tough to figure out. Aerostich arms you with the easiest mounts ever!
Where Do I Put It?
Modern motorcycles do not have a whole lot of places to hang stuff you really need. You can buy a tank bag with a map pocket for direction in life, but some bikes do not have the real estate available on the gas tank. Other bikes just do not look good cluttered up with a canvas bag sitting on the gas cap. GPS systems can be used with expensive mounts, but where can you hang them on handle bars? Garage door openers are usually relegated to an unusable position inside a jacket pocket, along with your cell phone. All of todays conveniences end up in inconvenient places for a motorcyclist. But sometimes, all it takes is a simple device like the HD Sleeve Window Pocket.
Simply Simple
The HD Sleeve Window Pocket has a 6 ½ inch by 3 ¾ inch gusseted clear vinyl window on a Cordura backing. The window is sealed with a Velcro flap for weather protection. There are two modes of attachment for the pocket. Two sets of straps are provided to wrap around your arm so that the window can be attached to any jacket, or even no jacket! It can also be alternately attached by sewing opposite Velcro to your jacket and just slapping it on. If decisions do not come easy for you, the window pocket can be worn or either the left or right arm. Once again, Aerostich has come up with innovative products targeted at the serious sportsman.
How Does It Work?
If you have experience in reading a wrist watch you can use the Sleeve Window Pocket. Mounted just above where your watch would be, a slight rotation of the forearm and tip of the head puts it in easy view. Being able to adjust the distance from older eyes aids viewing by the senior set. I have never found it to interfere with motorcycle controls or other gear, and the adjustable nature of the strap mount allows comfortable wear.
In The Rain
So far I have, at different times, garage door openers, GPS units, cell phones, BlackBerry's , maps, and written directions. The water stays out and the cargo stays dry. Pushing the button on the garage door opener is much easier than any other mount or storage location I have used. And while I steer clear of Bluetooth use while I ride, you can read the number of an incoming caller or even the subject of an email through the vinyl window while riding. With cell phone or Blackberry units set in the vibrate mode you can feel the warning buzz through most jackets. I cannot vouch for all equipment, but in a whole lot of cases, a number of important controls are still workable through the vinyl window. Again, not only do maps stay dry and readable while riding through the storm, but so do other small gear.
Drawbacks
The versatility of the window pocket does mean that you have to attach and adjust it each time you use it. I do not consider it a permanent mount item. Powering GPS, garage door openers, and cell phones pretty much leave you to internal batteries since I do not recommend having wires running from your forearms to the bike. Thick GPS units are also out of the question. I do know that the smaller Garmin units do fit, but doubt if there is any way to use a Tom Tom.
Is It Worth It?
You will have to decide if it is worth $25 for access to your garage door opener or GPS. I do know that for me it keeps those critically important items right at my finger tips and within clear view when needed. To the day I have not figured out a more useful place for a BlackBerry either. Not wanting to compete for space on the already cluttered handle bars, I would rather have the versatile convenience of the HD Sleeve Window Pocket.
