Pros:Sterilizes bites which treats the problem, not the symptom.

Cons:Has to be used shortly after being bitten.

The Bottom Line: So long as you use this stuff quickly after being bitten, it works amazing.

Afterbite is very different from most insect bite treatments on the market in that it treats the route cause and not the symptom.

Amusing facts to bore your friends:
To understand how Afterbite works, you have to consider why a mosquito bite itches. When mosquitoes are done draining blood, they inject their own saliva into your skin in order to stop their blood intake and so they can pull out of your skin. Their saliva, like any other saliva, is laced with all sorts of bacteria and unmentionables. When introduced to the blood stream this can lead to any number of infections, the most popular being Malaria and West Nile.

So why does mosquito a bite itch? The itching is usually an allergic reaction. Your own histamines are attacking the saliva and whatever else is in it. Your histamines are what more or less cause allergies, hence why drugs that treat allergies are called anti-histamines. In many cases, histamines are a little too protective of the body and will attack plenty of relatively harmless junk that your body comes in contact with on a regular basis such as dust, pollen, animal dander, etc. You can think of allergies like your dog when the mail man comes to your house. The mail man isn’t doing anything harmful to you or your house, but your dog still feels the need to attack said mail man.

So how does Afterbite differ from other insect bite treatments? Most other insect bite treatments are nothing more than a topical antihistamine, meaning that they allow you to simply ignore the itch. Afterbite on the other hand is ammonia based, which is a cleaning agent that can be used to kill bacteria and some viruses. It effectively sterilizes the bite wound, therefore, there is nothing left for your histamines to attack, negating any itching. Since Afterbite sterilizes the bite wound, your risk of contracting diseases from the bite plummet dramatically.

However, Afterbite is not without its faults. The most obvious problem is the smell. Since Afterbite is ammonia based, it has a strong ammonia smell. It goes away pretty quickly, but it is VERY noticeable when you apply it. Thankfully, when it’s still in the tube, the ammonia smell is very faint to the point of being unnoticeable. You apply almost like a marker. The tube it comes in has a small hole at one end, and when you point it downward and apply pressure, the ammonia solution, which is very watery dribbles out.

Furthermore, Afterbite really only works when you apply it within a few minutes after being bitten. There isn’t a finite amount of time in which it works or doesn’t work, i.e. if you put it on within 5 minutes of being bit it works and if you put it on at the 5 minute 1 second mark it doesn’t work. Again, there is no specific time frame where it works, but generally it doesn’t work well on bites that have been around for more than 1 hour or those that have been excessively scratched. Scratching a bite only spreads the mosquito saliva and assorted bacteria around, causing a mild infection mostly under the skin where Afterbite can’t get to.

The sooner you apply Afterbite after being bitten, the bite will itch less, for a shorter period of time, and it won’t swell up or turn red. In many cases, an application in the first few minutes after a bite will clear up the bite to where it is completely unnoticeable to the naked eye within five minutes or so. The key is a quick response. The sooner you get it on a bite, the better it works.
