My husband and I can both be standing side by side outside at night for the same length of time. Yet when we come in, he will have more mosquito bites on him than I will. I tell him it's his sweet meat but for some reason the little buggars do love him more. Maybe it's his aftershave or cologne?
Regardless, my husband is like a child once he is bitten. He can NOT leave the bites alone. He has to scratch them, complain, and then scratch them some more. He has to tell me how much they itch him. "Why do they bite ME so much?," he wines. Scratch, scratch, scratch. He is not happy until he scratches them bloody.
A little fact about mosquitoes. Male mosquitoes do not bite. Blame it on the female. She is the one who pierces the skin with her stylet. The proteins in her saliva is what makes the bite swell and itch. The female requires a blood meal every three to four days for the protein necessary to produce eggs. Not that this little factoid makes much of a difference to us. Who in the heck can tell the difference between a male and female mosquito when they're bombarding you at night?
We've tried all sorts of remedies with varying success. If we know we are going to be out at night, we use Avon's Skin So Soft before hand. It helps keep them at bay somewhat. For the bites we do acquire, we have tried a variety of remedies: meat tenderizer, alcohol, toothpaste, baking soda, cortisone creams, you name it. They all help to varying degrees but hubby's favorite initial treatment is After Bite Itch Eraser.
After Bite Itch Eraser looks like a really big pen. It's designed to be small enough for portability. One whiff will tell you that the main ingredient is ammonia. (Something I never thought about putting on a bite, but it works). Yes, it does sting a little, but nothing too bad- unless you're like my husband and have already scratched a gaping hole into your leg.
As a health care worker, I know most germs are transmitted by the hands. Excessive scratching of mosquito bites with unwashed hands can introduce bacteria into the skin such as strep or staph. The ammonia in After Bite Itch Eraser acts as an antiseptic and cleanses the bite area. The other ingredient (mineral oil) also soothes the area somewhat so scratching is not as likely. After Bite Itch Eraser does run sometimes, but I still don't think it's as messy as the other remedies. Once it's dry, no one knows you're wearing it.
Much better than walking around with a gob of baking soda or toothpaste caked on your leg.
No, After Bite Itch Eraser is not 100% effective. You will probably still have some itching, but it won't be as intense. I usually have to use several applications in the beginning but at least there are no limits on how often you can use it.
