| KMINER's Full Review: AirBake CushionAir 14" x 16" Insulated Baking Shee... |
Though not known for my finesse in the kitchen, I can cook. Ok I can help cook. And I can make enough things to feed us. Thankfully my husband likes to make the bigger meals and leaves the smaller stuff to me (I am the hot dog and macaroni cheese queen!). I am often responsible for making any and all side dishes and desserts. And I was tired of everything burning - no matter which of the 3 baking sheets I was using. After talking with my mother and sister in law's they both confessed they each had a AirBake CushionAir 14" x 16" Insulated Baking Sheet. I stared at them not knowing this was something special, something that would change my whole kitchen world.
So What's An AirBake CushionAir 14" x 16" Insulated Baking Sheet?
Easy to find at stores on-line and even here in my local kitchen stores and Walmart, I bought 1 sheet for only $10.00. I could tell right away this baking sheet was different - not better or worse, just different. It was certainly more silver and shiny than the others I had used many times. And it felt thicker and more solid. Also it had only one "lip" on it - hmm ... not sure what I'd think about that one.
Amazon.com a major retailer who sells these sheets through Target.com states:
" When you bake with original AirBake insulated bakeware by Wearever, you can forget about burning those cookies. The ThermaShield Support System controls and distributes heat evenly. Dishwasher safe; rustproof. 5-yr. manufacturer's warranty. Made in USA. "
Starting With Our AirBake CushionAir 14" x 16" Insulated Baking Sheet
Simple unwrapping of wrap and we were good to go. I hear ideas about coating this in oil first and heating in my oven (from my mother in law), though I did not see any mention of this on the simple information when I unwrapped. Basically all I noted was to leave it standing "up" to dry after washing and do not use for broiling (an important note, since we broil tater tots and fries often). I washed it up in the sink quickly and was ready to go. ( Note - I was told repeatedly to not put this in the dishwasher - which we don't have - though it states on the site it is ok to, I don't know that I would recommend doing so")
I did notice, as mentioned, that it was very flat with only one "lip" or handle on it. I worried about how easy this would be to pick up and also how well it would keep things on it. In this respect, here's what I've noticed:
1. This makes a great baking sheet for cookies! I am actually finally getting compliments on how good they taste and not on how burnt they are! It also works great on anything that needs to be "browned" - for us a major one is garlic bread, toast, or reheating bread. It is so nice to finally have warm bread that we don't have to scrape the bottom of.
2. I hesitate to recommend this for something with "goo" or something that will slide off - unless you are very careful when lifting this sheet out of the oven (you sort of have to lift straight up first, and then out). We often make stuffed chicken (like chicken kiev, cordon blue) and it has been a little stressful using this sheet and hoping the cheese that invariably leaks out doesn't run off the sheet. Additionally, with items like french fries, they cook beautifully, but since they can roll around a little when taking out, they have a greater tendency to fall off the sheet.
This became a big discussion in our house the night I brought home popcorn chicken from Walmart and used the AirBake CushionAir 14" x 16" Insulated Baking Sheet to heat up the chicken. My husband pulled out the sheet and little bits of chicken went all over the bottom inside of my oven! - it was quite a mess!
Therefore, I typically use this more when I know I can watch the food and be careful, as my husband won't. It has cooked the chicken and fries well, again I just had to be careful pulling the sheet out. I have also used this sheet for cooking mini pizzas, just being mindful of the cooking time and cheese bubbling.
This sheet has consistently performed well - making goodies look perfectly golden brown, with no hint of burning. I now feel comfortable offering to bring in cookies and such to events. Nothing has stuck to this sheet and it has always been a breeze to wash up - just a sponge ans some soapy water. Storage isn't an issue either - it fits in just fine on the bottom shelf with all of my other baking sheets.
Almost Perfect
If this baking sheet has better support around the edges it would be just about all we used (except for broiling of course). Since it does not have wonderful support I do mainly use it when I am cooking something small, or when baking dessert items or breads.
We are more than thrilled to finally have our own AirBake CushionAir 14" x 16" Insulated Baking Sheet and have since purchased them as gifts for those people we know with events coming up. I feel every household could benefit from having at least one - your cookies alone will thank you for it!
