I first heard about Airborne from my mom, a retired high school teacher. She informed me that there was a miracle "drug" on the market that would help boost your immune system to ward off minor viruses. I figured she placed some extra stock in the product because it was invented by a teacher trying to protect herself against all the germs on the papers she had to grade. But, as usual, my mom knows best, and she was right about Airborne.
What is it?
Airborne is an herbal health formula chock full of herbal extracts, vitamins, electrolytes, amino acids and antioxidants. It was designed by a 2nd grade teacher to combat Airborne germs that cause viruses such as the common cold.
You can find Airborne for approximately $7 in almost any pharmacy department and in many flavors, including Lemon-Lime, Orange and Grapefruit. One cylinder contains 10 quarter-sized effervescent tablets.
How to use it
Airborne is intended for use before entering germ-infested environments, such as health clubs or airplanes (but really, what place isn't germ infested?) or at the first sign of a cold.
To take it, you drop 1 tablet into a small amount of water. I usually use about 1/4 of a dixie bathroom cup. Allow the tablet to dissolve, which usually takes about a minute, and then drink the water. You may repeat every 3 hours as necessary. Children are instructed to take 1/2 a tablet, but I would consult your pediatrician first.
My experience
I began taking this almost a year ago when I was severely sleep deprived between having a newborn and trying to keep up with my law school studies. I seemed to be battling a cold every other week and was tired of not being able to get any precious sleep for lack of being able to breathe through my nose.
I picked up the Lemon-Lime flavor and haven't tried the others as of yet. I first took one when I felt the familiar scratchiness in my throat and had the faint signs of a runny nose on the horizon. The tablets are easy to dissolve in the water, and once done, the water is a little fizzy and yellow. Not the most appetizing drink I've ever had, but it did taste a little like 7-up and wasn't nearly as a bad of an aftertaste as, say, Robitussin. I took 2 tablets that first time and I was sold by the next day on this product. That cold never did develop. In fact, I have continued to take Airborne whenever I felt a cold coming on and I have had only 1 cold in the past year. On average, during the winter season, I usually have a minimum of 5!
I've also taken this as a preventative when Kid comes home sick from daycare or when every single one of my classmates seems to be sporting a virus of some sort. It really does seem to work as a preventative formula because I've only had that 1 cold since taking this for almost a year. I don't, however, repeat every 3 hours because that would amount to going through a container way too fast for my checkbook. I find that, when others are sick around me, 1 tablet seems to boost my immune system enough to prevent me from catching what they have. When I feel the symptoms coming on myself, I usually take 2 or 3 tablets that day and this process has worked well for me.
I don't really feel much in the way of after-effects from taking Airborne. The only thing that I have noticed is that I feel less worn down on the days that I take it. It seems that the extra jolt of vitamins does give me more energy and makes me feel a tad more refreshed, as if I really did have a full night's worth of sleep.
Overall, if you're around a lot of germs (which everyone is) or if you've been battling colds left and right, I'd suggest giving this product a try.
