It seems to be a fact of life that manufactures of portable cd players will always bundle crappy headphones with there products. After paying nearly 200 dollars a cd player I was disappointed with the poor headphones that came with the player. I was always intrigued with the noise canceling headphones, yet that stratospheric price factor kept me from purchasing them. Thats why I was excited to find that Aiwa produced a set of noise canceling headphones for 50. I was worried that I would be wasting my money on a cheap gimmick, but I was wrong.
To cancel out the noise the headphones employ 2 microphones in the headphones to pick up outside noises, then they produce an exact mirror of the outside noise seemingly canceling out the background noises. The systems work great considering the price of the headphones. The headphones arent designed to cancel out sharp sounds such as a person talking next to you or a loud TV. The headphones do excel at canceling much of the everyday noises that most people never notice. I really like them for car trips; the headphones do a fabulous job of getting rid of all the road noise a 13-year-old Pontiac can generate. To power the systems a single AAA battery is required and the battery life easily out last the batteries in my cd player.
Of course the noise canceling would be useless if the headphones sounded bad, luckily they dont. The 38mm drivers produce a nice rich sound that is far better than the headphones typically bundled with portable devices.
The only negative quality to the headphones is that when the noise canceling feature is engaged, the headphones generate a slight humming sound. In a noisy environment the sound is barely audible, but in quieter settings it is quite prevalent. This is really not a terrible fault since if it is really quiet you don't need to use the noise canceling feature anyway.
To me the headphones are very comfortable, but that is one factor that tends to change from person to person. I have been very pleased with these headphones and I would defiantly recommend them to all my friends.
